Description

This model uses an acrylic cube from container store (linked below) and a 4x6 picture frame glass pane. There is a hole in the top to fill the sealed base with water (don't over fill it because it will leak from the glass if it overflows inside the formicarium) to keep the humidity up and a hole in the back to drill into the cube and connect with 1/8" ID tubing. You could glue the glass pane in if it doesn't fit as well as mine does but it should just push in and be held quite firmly. I wanted to be able to remove the glass to clean the printed formicarium out in case of a colony collapse. The print has been tested but the entire setup has not been tested with a colony yet (waiting on the nuptial flights in my area).

Update: I captured a Campo queen and she has about a dozen eggs now so things are looking good so far.

It looks like the water reservoir is not escape proof when the water level lowers by a little bit, or am I missing something?

For smaller species they may be able to escape from the water reservoir. I'm looking at ways to prevent this, possibly by making the holes smaller.

I paused the print and filled the reservoir with a piece of sponge. great print otherwise

that's a pretty good idea but some species like solenopsis will destroy a sponge.

I've been thinking about a version that uses 8x10 glass so check back later.
