Description
The torii is a traditional Japanese gateway that marks the boundary between the sacred space of a Shinto shrine and the profane world. It is a symbolic structure representing the entrance to a sacred place, often characterized by two vertical columns and a horizontal lintel at the top, with a second beam placed slightly below. The torii is generally painted in a bright red color, known as vermillion, which symbolizes vitality and protection against evil, although white, black, and torii made of other materials also exist. Its main function is to delimit the sacred space from the human world, acting as a boundary and a "barrier" that prevents the entry of impure things.
