Description

This is a remix of the excellent “Recipiente Silicagel Silice gel Anti humidad anti humidity box” by Xtronchox to improve its suitability for use of molecular sieve beads as a desiccant in the AMS. Thank you for your design, Xtronchox.

The only change to the design is to the size (& consequently, number) of the air breather perforations in the lid and body of the box, to reduce them in size to 1.25mm square, so that the small beads of molecular sieve desiccant cannot fall through.

I use Type 3 molecular sieve desiccant in my dryboxes because it is better in every way (except 1!) than silica gel, and I don't fancy leaving calcium chloride (the Bambu Labs supplied desiccant) past its “use by date”, by accident/negligence(!), in the AMS. The only advantage of silica gel over molecular sieve is that it will absorb more water. Molecular sieve has a much more avid absorption (it's actually adsorption in the case of molecular sieve!) of water than silica gel, but can only hold about 20% of its dry weight. Some filaments have a higher affinity for water than silica gel, but not molecular sieve. I have found that stored filament is kept dryer by molecular sieve, but only if one remembers to dry the beads before they reach their capacity! 10g of beads in a pyrex jug will dry in about 3 minutes in a 900W microwave oven - THE JUG WILL BE VERY HOT AFTER 3 MINUTES, PLEASE USE OVEN GLOVES. The beads must be removed promptly from the microwave oven, otherwise they will quickly reabsorb water from the humid air in the oven! This desiccant box will comfortably hold 20g of molecular sieve beads.

the lid is difficult to close and to fill

That's a good looking print! I agree that the lid can be difficult to close. the trick seems to be to insert the front edge first and then push down the back. The maximum quantity of dry type 3 molecular sieve that I'm using is 20g. This is comfortable to fill, & allows the lid to shut easily (front first, back second!) BW Pete
