Description

***Edit 09/05/2024*** - Slight reduction to overall tolerances to make for size to allow for snug alignment of the front/back plates, as well as small change to overall shape to allow storage in Mitutoyo Caliper box (see second image). Thanks in particular to @Spoonier for their comment about this!

This is an adaptor that can be quickly attached to any standard set of 16mm wide Digital Calipers (that's most of them!).

It provides a lockable depth base, that dramatically increases the span of the caliper bottom and makes measuring (using the caliper depth sword) much easier. Effectively allowing you to obtain measurements for objects / features that were previously very difficult or even impossible.

All items print with zero support. No need for metal fasteners as the knurled thumb screws are all printed too and are more than up to the job.

Assembly: The adaptor plates index together & are secured to the calipers with use of the two longer knurled bolts (from the back) and then the shorter knurled locking bolt can be inserted from the front and tightened down onto the face of the caliper. See exploded assembly BOM.

Set zero & use: Simply slide down flush with the end calipers, fully tighten the locking bolt. This is best done on a flat surface like a table top. Now you can slide the caliper as per norm…. but with improved 75mm wide base to measure away from.

I have tested all at 0.16 layer height and 0.2mm also and both work well. Uploaded print profile at the higher resolution along with change of colour for the thumbscrews as it just looks better that way :) Enjoy printing and I hope this increases measuring bliss for you too!

I love designing for 3D printing, please take a look at all my other models which are all free (and will always continue to be)… if you value any of the downloads enough & are able to support me, then please consider buying me a coffee to keep me going! www.buymeacoffee.com/DatumCAD

***Minor Edit 28/02/2024*** - Not required for most, but I have updated ‘Knurled Screw (Lock)’ to be 5mm long (previously 4mm) as some have reported that cheaper calipers can be a little thinner and so need the extra length. If you have the older version and struggling to get things reasonably tight, then perhaps just try reprinting this one item which I am now making the standard going forward.

Attaches well to the cheap plastic calipers we all have, but I have to really tighten it to it's maximum to get it to stay in place on my nicer stainless set. Threads are machine screw and not really print-optimized. Well designed and does it's function properly. For print settings - watch out for sagging that you might need to trim with a knife on the threads. I almost knocked a point off for use of Grid infill and inner/outer wall order, but the print _does_ work with these settings.

Thanks for your honest review. All well received, and I have no idea how Grid infill snuck in there, that will be updated immediately. Glad you have provided a print profile for single plate option also - cheers!

I've done a lot with printing threads and it always is a challenge, so I can completely appreciate what you've put together here! Screw 3 feels just a tiny bit short to be able to clamp down hard on some of my calipers. My cheap plastic (Adoric) calipers tell me that my expensive stainless (Kynup) have a 3.0mm thick shank which is baaarely holds on to. In reverse, the Adoric's shank is 3.76mm which it binds nicely to. I wasn't sure how your layer heights were developed in design - this could easily be an issue if it was built along numbers that don't divide evenly in to 0.16mm heights, kicking the overall size of the gap for the shank slightly larger than it should be, perhaps. I get a rather consistent 3.90mm reading around the opening on mine. Would it be 4.0mm or 3.8mm if I printed it using 0.2mm height, perhaps? Since the part had threads I assumed finer was better and 0.16mm height wouldn't impact it. Part of what I try to do in CAD is "think like a printer" and imagine my dimensions in terms of line width and layer height so the dimensions of the mesh that I send to the slicer will be able to be printed exactly without rounding due to a layer height discrepancy or inner/outer filet that isn't in aspect causing lines to get pinched, etc. Please don't take any of this as negative criticism! I'm a _network_ engineer who pretends to be a mechanical engineer (with zero formal training) because CAD and 3D printing is a lot more fun a way to get ideas out of my head than a drill 😅

Amazing feedback sir. It made me think a bit about how i'm modeling my own things.

Profile is good, works well. I wish the knobs had "wings" like a T-nut to make them a little easier to use but beyond that a very helpful little device.

Just add a rectangle to the knob before printing.

Print came out perfectly. Fit well and I appreciate how well it was designed. One suggestion for a future rehash of the project is what if it was able to ft in the Mitutoyo case. The trapezoid is almost the exact shape, however this print is maybe 2-3% too big.

Great to hear, thank you. And a superb suggestion, one I am still scratching my head about... as to how I came to design it this shape & apparently not knowing of this matching void in the box..... perhaps I did, just subconsciously!?! Having tried in my case I can see that there is only a few mm in height preventing the fit like you say, Safe to say I wont be able to let it go un-addressed, a revision will be happening :) Thanks again for pointing this out.

Just updated the print profile. The bolts all stay the same so if you want to you can just re-print the front/back plates. Thanks again for pointing this out, great suggestion :)

Works as advertised. Had to 'wear in' the screws a couple times before they rotated smooth enough as to where I could use them on the calipers.
