Description

This is a pill dispenser I designed because I have ADHD and I often can't remember whether I have taken my medication. Most pill organizers are designed to organize pills for a whole day (not per dose) and need to be refilled every few days (not helpful if you are forgetful or inattentive) or are bulky and hard to carry around. So I designed this pill dispenser for those like me that don't have a problem with organizing pills (I only have one Rx medication), but struggle to remember whether I have already taken my dose.

This simple design is only three parts and can be printed with minimal supports (the middle part needs supports), is easy to assemble, portable (fits in a pocket or hand purse), and helps you remember your last dose of medication. This can hold about three weeks worth of capsules (~20) in each section (40 - 45 total).

Before you print:

Make sure you flip all your parts 180 degrees before printing (bottom side up). After printing, I used a sharpie to highlight the text debossed on the middle part for better readability.

Print parameters used by me:

Printer: Ender 3 V2

Filament: PLA +

Layer Height: 0.2 mm

Bed Temp: 50 deg C

Nozzle Temp: 215 deg C

Infill: 5%

Perimeters: 3

Slicer: PrusaSlicer

Print Speed: 60 mm/sec (max)

Assembly:

After printing the three parts:

  1. The top part (fitment) snaps on to the middle part (container). Align the grooves of the fitment to the container and push in to assemble.
  2. Fill the cavities with your pills. This container is divided into two sections to hold two different types of medication, one for morning and another for evening.
  3. Screw on the bottom part (closure) till it is tight.

To use:

  1. Using this pill dispenser is easy, the window in the fitment will tell you whether you are at you AM or PM medication.
  2. Hold the fitment's finger grooves and turn the fitment 90 degree clockwise. The dispense will open for AM medication.
  3. After you pop the pill out of the dispenser turn another 90 degrees clockwise, now the window in the fitment will read PM. Rotating the fitment another 90 degrees clockwise will now open the dispenser for you PM medication.
  4. This way, after you take your morning medication, if you can't recall whether you did, you just need to read the window on the pill dispenser and if it still says AM then you still need to take your morning medication, if it says PM you have already taken your morning pill.

This pill dispense works well for most regular pill sizes. STEP files have been uploaded, so if you need to adjust the opening you can do so in CAD.

Design Considerations:

  1. Designed with seniors in mind. The grooves make it easy to turn the dispenser without making it bulky.
  2. (Untested) Based on some research by Wilson & Bix, 2021 (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003687020302970) there is some evidence that larger diameter closures are child resistant as their small hands have a hard time generating enough torque with larger closures. So this is child resistant?

Hope this design helps others like it helped me.
