Parametric Dowel & Pin Generator
A parametric model for dowels and pins, useful for prototyping, furniture repair, and workshop projects. Length, diameter, tolerance, bevels, and surface type can all be adjusted directly in MakerWorld’s parametric editor.
Parameters
- Length – overall dowel length (mm)
- Diameter – dowel diameter (mm)
- Tolerance – reduces diameter slightly for press-fit or slip-fit joints (start with 0.1–0.2 mm)
- Bevel length – chamfer at each end for easier insertion
- Serrated – adds gripping ridges for tighter hold (off = smooth surface)
- Flat bottom layers – optional trimmed underside for better bed adhesion
- FOR LARGER DIAMETERS with Serrated turned on, the amount of layers trimmed for printbed adhesion should be also increased!
Editing guide
- Open in MakerWorld’s parametric editor.
- Adjust dimensions and options to match your needs.
- Preview the model, then export STL for slicing.
Print profiles included
- PLA – quick prints, general use, indoor projects
- ASA – stronger, heat-resistant pins for outdoor or load-bearing use
Tips
- For tight fits, keep tolerance low (0.1–0.15 mm).
- For slip fits, increase tolerance to 0.2–0.3 mm.
- If you’re feeling lazy, bump tolerance by ~0.2 mm and just leave the brim attached for extra grip.
- Orientation is optimized for strength along the dowel length.
