Description

I designed this toy for my 3 year old son to play with so it is intended to be robust enough to survive rough play, and the bucket is slightly oversized for more fun. There’s also an accompanying dump truck model.

Please let me know if any parts break and leave feedback on anything that could be improved upon in the design.

The final model is roughly 80 mm wide and everything is assembled with snaps (no glue or fasteners). The only tool required is a coin to tighten the body and tracks together. And there is a hollow pocket for some old AA batteries to add a bit of weight to the body. These are purely optional.

Most moving parts are designed with 0.2 mm clearances which work fine on the Bambu X1C but might fuse on other printers. If any joints are frozen or too tight to assemble, try setting XY Contour Compensation to -0.05 mm. The tracks are offered in two variants, 0.15 mm clearance and 0.2 mm clearance in the raw files. My print came out nicely with 0.15 mm clearance track, but I understand this is not possible on all printers. The tracks show the build-plate side, so they will look a bit nicer if printed on a textured plate.

Be careful to install the H-link build plate face out. It’s a common mistake.

When loosening joints for the first time, grab or pry as close to the pivot as possible. If a joint is a little bit stiff, it’s pretty easy to snap a piston by pushing on the end.

Update 2024-03-30:

Added some extra brim to boom cylinders to help with adhesion.

Update 2023-12-4:

Minor updates to boom to reduce stuck or broken parts and improve bed adhesion.

Update 2023-10-13:

Several minor design fixes to make parts more robust. I've also included half-length track stls for smaller build plates. You need 4 of these per model. And I've included a step file of the assembled excavator so that you can preview different colour pallet ideas. And lastly, there is now a single plate profile that crams the whole thing onto one plate if you're feeling confident and don't care about colours.

This is awesome. It’s so gratifying to see a design I worked on come to life for someone else. PS the H-link is on backwards. I’m not sure it matters much but the bucket cylinder might run a bit stiffer because it has a flat on the other side.

Good eye. The bucket moved smooth either way. Thanks for sharing this amazing design. My 3 year old son and I had a great time building this together.

Great model. Printed at 100% and had few quality and tolerance issues so printed again at 150% … that took another 39h at 0.08mm ... absolutely worth it!

Can you share which parts had problems? It’s helpful to know and some can be easy design fixes

The 100% was too easy to break on 100%. I had to glue the "booms" back together because they broke easily. I printed it again at 150% and it worked perfectly except one small print issue and one logical issue. This image explains the print issue. Those two "booms" felt down. I had to print them separately and with hot water bend the plastic to put them back. The logical issue was that at the 150% the material was not easy bend so the "bucket" broke when I was putting it on the arm. Printed the "bucket" again and with hot water achieved what I needed.

Very good design. The only issue was the ram by the cab came lose while printing. Other than that great looking Excavator.

Thanks. How did you fix it? Reprint the whole body or just the cylinder! PS if you give the engine a bit more of a squeeze it should click down into the body. There’s a little hole for a screwdriver if you want to pry it out later.

I only printed the cylinder by adding negative blocks around it in Bambu Studio.

The engine cover is not down all the way yet. I'm waiting on some lead fishing weights to use instead of old Batteries. Thanks

The Cabin I have to print again because the side is not snapping in properly maybe because of the multicolor print, but the rest fits nicely. Printed with 0.12mm layerhight.

It can take a bit of force to snap the side of the cabin down into the seat and walkway. I recommend pushing with your thumb roughly 45 deg downward and inward.

I will try, thanks for the effort and the design that is really well snap fit connections. Is it possible to brand your logo below, so I could fit another company logo on the back? it would be nice gifts for our customers like construction companies.

your right, i needed it to push it in a bit harder until it snaped in.

issues with hydraulic cylinders for the arm. will reprint with additional infill and added aupports.

This seems to be the most common issue I hear about in the comments. Did the arms break during printing or when trying to loosen them after printing?

Replying to @MurataIndustrie :
it was during assembly they broke. and the other cylinders seemed like they were not supported properly during the print and failed towards the end of the cylinders. I'm going to attempt to print it again and add supports and infill. the track chassis printed nicely for me.

The biggest thing that should help with the cylinders that fail near the end is good bed adhesion. Turning up the bed temp by 5 degrees and making sure it's very clean will help with that.

Even though it’s not my model and I just made the scaling (and printed the scaled version) it makes me very happy to see someone enjoying this model. ☺️

my son adores this model. printed at 150% scale. tracks at 146.4% to avoid them becoming lose.
