Description

The Caterpillar, a character from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The Caterpillar is a hookah-smoking caterpillar. Alice does not like the Caterpillar when they first meet, because he does not immediately talk to her and when he does, it is usually in short, rather rude sentences.

His memorable phrase is a breathy "Whooo ... are ... you?"

No supports are required. If you have the proper filament colors, no painting is needed.

The assembled model is 290mm tall.

Enjoy, and be ready to answer when someone asks "who are you?"

(Do not let the abundance of notes scare you away from building this model. I just like to cover all bases due to the different skill sets of makers)

Printing and assembly tips

Printing tips
1-No supports are required.

2-Use your judgement for brims/rafts on the hands, legs and hookah_mouth pieces due to the smallish bases. Also, the body_top_in and body_top_out pieces are tall with reasonable bases but you may want to consider a brim depending on your bed adhesion.

3-The parts should fit nicely when printed cleanly or with a slight first layer squish. A reminder, first layer cleanup also applies to the inside edges of parts. Holes for pins that are on the print surface should be clean of first layer squish. The hookah_mouth also has a hole in the base for the hookah hose that needs to be clean.

4-The body_top_out contains a built in support resting cleanly on the part. The support was tested with a .4mm nozzle and .2mm layer height. When it was removed, I needed absolutely no cleanup. If anyone has an issue with this, I will release the part without the built in support.

..
Assembly tips:

1-I used both E6000 craft glue and thick superglue to put this model together.

2-The eye_lashes are quite small and can be glued to the dent provided, as long as they are positioned properly they do not need to be fully inserted.

3-The leftright legs are slightly different but if they get mixed up they should still fit. **Important, be sure to note the correct position of the legs to the shoes as noted in the diagram. I glued the body of the caterpillar to the mushroom before attaching the completed legs/shoes.

4-leaf1 and leaf2 should be glued together. Once the mushroom and base are completed, the leaf combination can then be inserted into the base and rest against the notch in the mushroom_top.

5-I've included some tiny aligning pins for each of the smoke rings. Take the time to join the two halves of each ring properly. The transparent filament makes it quite difficult to see what you are doing. Each ring has a small flat side extrusion in it for insertion to leaf1. All three rings are basically identical, so work with the larger one first and then rotate and position the other ones exactly the same. The rings should cleanly fit into the leaf for gluing and line up.

6-For the hookah hose, I used 450mm of ABS filament right off the roll. The hookah_mouth and hookah_spout have dents to accept 1.75mm filament. If I get any requests for a different size, I'll release the parts. For a more 'natural' look, you can use a heat gun/hair dryer to soften the filament as you curve it around the model.

7-Refer to the assembly diagram in the pictures section as well as the uploaded pictures for putting the model together. The model is meant to be glued.

everything printed grate on my A1 the only one that’s a bit difficult is the body belly part that has the face on it because of how tall it tends to peel off the plate if you can print it laying down it should fix that or maybe add more supports so it has a bigger surface area on the build plate

I added a seperate design profile for handy app users and the part you're having difficulty printing on your printer. I added a larger brim for better bed adhesion and some supports that will also help keep everything in place.

it worked thank you so much I think that I had problems because I have the A1 and the bed moves to fast or to much for the hight without enough supports

fun print as mentioned before top half of the body front and back is very tricky to print had several failed prints in used both my A1 Mini and X1C to complete this build

Did you use a brim for those parts as per my instructions? It's all about bed adhesion. Textured plates with PLA with smallish bases are not as good as smooth plates as well. Your print looks great. Teamwork, Steve

I followed you're really great instructions can't fault them I tried 4 times to print the upper half would get up to the eyes/nose and fail so painted on supports I'm really happy with the way you designed the model and how it turn out 👍

Thanks. I'm wondering if the faster printers are having issues with some of the curves. I've upgraded printers since that model was posted, so my future models will be tested against the current slicers and new speeds. Teamwork, Steve

hi I keep having problems printing the light blue part because of how tall it is it beeps popping off the build plate when it’s around the mouth part any chance you can add one of just that part maybe laying down or idk with more support? please I’m only able to print with the app so I can’t edit files

I'm not familiar with the app but the individual files are included and you should be able to take any part and simply print it. Personally I never use print profiles and just print the individual parts. If you still have issues, send me a direct message and I'll ask around and find someone that can make a plate of one part for you. Teamwork, Steve

I was able to print the individual parts but because of how tall that part it it keeps pealing of the bed. any chance you can have it laying down instead of standing or add more supports? I can print individual parts I just can move them on the plate so I can download the file to print it laying down or add supports. everything else printed grate this one is the only one I’m having problems with it because of the hight I slowed the printing down so it wouldn’t put so much stress on it but it still peeled of the plate even with glue stick on the plate

Another maker made a profile for just the one part for you and posted it. Laying it down in a different orientation would ruin the look of the part. Try the newly loaded profile and let me know how you make out. This is the first time I've heard anyone having an issue with the file, so you might have a slightly dirty plate, The new profile frome Gatekeeper, @Creative_3D should help.

It’s a shame the body wasn’t made adaptive, and I printed the red base upright for a better result, but the model is fabulous, thank you 🙏

Your models are consistently superb. You flawlessly capture the essence of the characters you sculpt, while meticulously optimizing each part for 3D printing. A true delight to print, assemble, and admire

Best laid out plates and print designs I’ve come across even better than ones I’ve paid loads for a must-have for any print collection Was pretty much press print and sit back to enjoy the results all the hard work has been done by the designer honestly can’t wait for more designs slightly tricky in a couple of places I'd say more down to me than the file 10/10 from me
