Description

šŸ§‚ Modular Spice Rack System

This project is a fully modular and customizable spice rack, designed to fit neatly into your kitchen shelves and adapt to your jars.
The model is split into 4 print plates, each one providing the parts needed to expand your storage system in different ways:

šŸ“¦ Plate 1 – Base Module

  • 1 container with a sliding tray.
  • The tray has a front handle and a stopper to prevent it from falling out.
  • The tray slides into the container through two small openings that align with its rails.
  • Includes caps for corner and side openings, allowing you to close unused connection points.
  • Image of the assembly:Ā

šŸ“¦ Plate 2 – Stacking Module

  • 1 container and 1 tray.
  • 4 connector bars to stack this container on top of the base module (Plate 1).
  • 2 covers for side openings.
  • Note: corner caps are not included here (they should be reused from Plate 1).
  • Image of the assembly on the previous module:Ā

šŸ“¦ Plate 3 – Side Extension Module

  • 1 container and 1 tray.
  • 4 corner caps.
  • 1 lateral joint to connect this module underneath the base module (Plate 1).
  • Note: no cover is included for the other joint, as it can be reused from Plate 1 once this module is attached.
  • Image of the assembly on the previous module:Ā

šŸ“¦ Plate 4 – Stacked Side Extension

  • 1 container and 1 tray.
  • 1 lateral joint to connect on top of Plate 3 and alongside Plate 2.
  • 2 double connector bars, designed to stabilize both upper and lower containers simultaneously.
  • When using these double bars, 2 of the regular bars from Plate 2 must be removed and reused to secure Plate 4.
  • Image of the assembly on the previous module:Ā

šŸ”„ Expanding the System

  • To add another stacked floor → print Plate 2.
  • To add a side module → print Plate 3.
  • To add a stacked side module → print Plate 4.
  • You can print these plates as many times as needed to build the structure you want.

āš™ļø Parametric Options

The current profiles are optimized for spice jars of 45 Ɨ 45 Ɨ 120 mm or 70x70x130 mm and a 235 mm deep shelf (also for 180 mm deep shelf as the maximum size for the A1 mini), but this design is fully customizable so you can adapt it to your own jars easily. Three main parameters control the entire system:

  • Long → The full depth of the container (usually matching your shelf depth).
  • JarDiameter → The diameter/width of your spice jars.
  • JarTall → The height of your jars. This determines the height of connector bars when stacking containers.

āš ļø Important: if you combine containers with different heights, you cannot use the double bars from Plate 4. In that case, you’ll need to rely on the lateral joints only for stability and use the bars from Plate 2.

🦶 Adjustable Feet (New)
Ā

A new optional profile has been added to improve compatibility with different cabinet types.
Ā

This plate includes a set of feet with different heights (2 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, and 10 mm), allowing you to slightly elevate the spice rack when needed.
Ā

This is especially useful if your cabinet has a front lip, uneven surfaces, or any obstruction that prevents the base from sitting flat or the tray from sliding freely.
Ā

By choosing the appropriate height, you can make the system more versatile and ensure smooth operation in a wider range of setups.

This model takes inspiration from the design by Rawsen Mitchell (https://makerworld.com/es/models/494987-modular-spice-rack), but has been entirely re-created from scratch in OpenSCAD.

Great design! Love being able to customize to my cabinets. One issue I found is that the 45x45x120 caps for side openings and lateral connectors are sized for the 70x70x130 design. They do not fit the smaller design and are not easily scalable to make them fit. Highlighted a side cap in a different color to show the size difference. And a tip for others: my cabinets have a 2-3mm lip at the bottom shelf of the cabinet, but printing extra corner caps and flipping them to use as feet on the bottom bases worked great to clear the lip.

Thank you so much for your comment, the correction, and for your great tip! You were absolutely right: the caps for side openings and lateral connectors were not matching the 45x45x120 version correctly. The issue was caused by an incorrect opening size. I’ve fixed it, and the opening has been adjusted to the correct size. For those of you who already printed the previous version, I’ve added a new plate that includes the smaller-sized caps and lateral connectors. I’ve also included a hybrid connector piece, with one side matching the old version and the other matching the corrected one, so you can still connect previously printed spice racks with the new updated ones. Additionally, these updated profiles include improvements to the sliding rail, making it easier to print and providing smoother movement. Thanks to your brilliant tip, I’ve also added a new profile with feet in different sizes, making the spice rack much more versatile for different cabinet setups. Thanks again!

it looks great and it will be useful the moment it works. printed the first plate so far, and the tray fits so goes inside the back slides, but does not slide out. already broke the front of the tray trying to make it slide... starting to print .1mm thinner tray. keep you posted.

have you found a way to get it to slide? I’m having the same issue: the tray fits perfectly in the base, but the stopper(?) pegs that secure it means that it is stationary

Thank you both for your feedback, and I’m really sorry the original version didn’t work properly for you. It’s also worth mentioning that in some cases the tray can feel quite tight at first, and it may need a bit of force initially to ā€œbreak inā€ and create its path along the rails. That said, I’ve updated the containers and improved the sliding rail system to make the tray move much more smoothly and be easier to print. I really appreciate you taking the time to test it and share your experience!

Thank you so much for the boost and your kind words — I really appreciate it! I’m looking forward to seeing how your setup turns out once it’s finished Just a quick note in case you’re still printing: the profiles have been updated recently with some improvements (especially in the rails), so you might want to check the latest version before continuing. Thanks again for your support!

it's a great design! thanks a lot! the only issue is that jars can easily fall because the walls for the sliding tray are quite short. would it be possible to make them a bit taller?
