The protagonist, Mark Watney, through the modification of the habitation module, established a farm, cultivating potatoes using Martian soil and human waste to achieve food self-sufficiency. The base also features a Martian rover for communication and transportation, and water is generated by burning hydrazine to address irrigation requirements. The holistic design prioritizes resource circulation, yet remains reliant on initial provisions from Earth.
