Gremlins is a 1984 American dark comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante. It was written by Chris Columbus and stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, and Frances Lee McCain. Howie Mandel provided the voice of Gizmo the Mogwai. The film draws upon folkloric legends of mischievous creatures—"gremlins"—that plagued the British Royal Air Force, dating back to World War II. The story follows Billy Peltzer, who acquires Gizmo as a pet, which then spawns others of its kind that evolve into the titular goblin-like monsters, wreaking havoc on Billy’s hometown on Christmas Eve.[2]
The film was accompanied by an extensive merchandising campaign and blends dark comedy with a Christmas setting. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and produced by Michael Finnell.
Gremlins was released theatrically on June 8, 1984, by Warner Bros. and met with both critical and commercial success. However, it was sharply criticized for some of its more violent scenes. In response to this and similar complaints regarding the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Spielberg proposed that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) revise its ratings system, which it did within two months of the film’s release, creating a new rating
