DESCRIPTION

I never seem to have enough work lights.  This latest work light is designed to be bright, compact, integrated batteries and magnetic.  Those combined features gels well with the work I do most often around working in electronics, 3D printing and general poking around.

The work light includes a battery voltage display that helps me keep an eye on the work light’s charge status.

I repurposed a pair of some old 3.5in hard disk drive internal Neodymium magnets.  These magnets are very strong and provide a certainty of the work light being held in-place.  Alternative magnets and shapes can be considered, too.

WORK LIGHT LED PANEL

The work light panel is bright 5W (500Lm) with a strong polycarbonate clear cover.  The light panel did include an integrated switch, but I permanently wired that out of the design.

I sourced my light panel through Amazon for AU$16 for two units …

I've included an internal inverter regulator module that maintains a constant LED panel brightness for the life of the battery charge.

VOLTAGE MONITORING

The work light is powered by three 18650 LiPo rechargeable batteries. In my case, I’m using 2000mAh cells that provides a total power capacity of around 20Wh.  The LED panel uses 5Wh, so I get around four hours of portable light.

When the internal battery voltage drops below a threshold of about 8.5V, the light will turn-off to protect the battery. Once charged, the work light is ready for use, again.

CHARGING

The work light batteries are charged via a 12V DC external power source.  The charging cycle can draw up to 3A of current via the DC barrel socket mounted on the work light’s side.  The included BMS (Battery Management System) protects the battery from over and under charge.

WIRING

Wire up the circuit as per circuit diagram.  Before connecting the light panel, you need to tune the inverter regulator output voltage. Do this by adjusting the multiturn trimpot and measuring the output voltage to about 11V.

NOTE: For advanced DIY’ers, only.  Soldering skills required …
