Description

This is a self-designed frame to hold cardboard strips to make a cat scratcher. 

 

Backstory: 

I printed @martymaker's Scratch Maker: Box Cutter (https://makerworld.com/en/models/669599-cat-scratch-maker-box-cutter-now-in-more-sizes#profileId-597254) and realized there weren't many good designs for the cardboard strips it produced. As a result I decided to waste too much time in Tinkercad and about 3 kilos of filament before I was happy with the final product.

 

Recommendations:

  • Filament: I recommend PLA but you may have success with PETG. I was initially using Elegoo Rapid PETG but adhesion absolutely sucked. I was getting too many bleps and blobs and there was really bad overhang at the support junction. I switched to Bambu basic PLA and all went perfect. (Don't yell at me about wet filament. I use the the SUNBU AMS LITE 1.0 and had dried it for at least 12 hours and kept it on standby while printing)
  • Infill: Whatever you want, but I did 10% gyroid and it is just right for me. Some may want a denser infill to add some weight depending on the floor the triangle will sit on. 
  • Speed: I recommend going a bit slower than you normally do. I had issues with model stability at the higher layers because of the need for supports but once I lowered to 200mm/s or less it all worked out. 
  • Supports: Normal leaves way too much mess, even when a tight junction is selected. I found strong tree supports work the best. 
  • Walls: you will see infill silhouettes and ridges with less than 3 walls. 
  • Batch printing: Do it at your own risk. If your filament isn't dialed in, then it'll be around hour 12 when you realize something is going awry. Trust me.

Assembly / Instructions:

  • You'll need to print 3 of the models out to form a triangle. No, you cannot make a square, rectangle, rhombus, or octagon with this design. 
  • Use @martymaker's Scratch Maker: Box Cutter (https://makerworld.com/en/models/669599-cat-scratch-maker-box-cutter-now-in-more-sizes#profileId-597254) and cut up more strips of cardboard than you think you'll need. If you lose the straight edge of your cut, you won't probably be able to use what you cut since wavy lines don't really mesh well with this. The only exception would be if you have a band saw and decide to batch cut all of your strips in a cool, wavy design. 
  • Amazon boxes work well. The bigger, heavy dutier, the better. 
  • Make sure to cut your strips with the corrugation visible on the edges. If not, your scratch pad will not last long at all. 
  • Decide how long you want the strips to be since that will dictate how large your triangle will be. Save that length and save it as a jig/template for all of your strips. You'll need to trim the length of all of the strips to be equal.
  • Fill one slot of the model with your strips. Make sure they're all level and then use tape or glue of your choice on the exposed strip ends. 
  • Take out your half secured scratch pad and flip it around to secure the other side of the strips. 
  • Assemble and sprinkle with your friend's favorite herbal strain. 
  • Take lots of pictures or videos and share with everyone when you report your make.
