I am here to introduce you, retractable dragon wand! I made this design for Makerworld dragon contest (3/5). I think it will be a great addition Ornaments and toy for kids for new Dragon year.

Best wishes to you all! 新年快乐.

This wand takes me a while to design and tests. It takes around 2h33m to print and cost right around 50g filaments.

The retractable part is not super rigid, it's by design, I did not put a lot of parameter in there, consider this will most gives to kids to play. So rather it break than hurt somebody.

Update:

v1.5 (1/13/24) - Fix internal parts geometeric issue. (tested) It only applys on P & X Series profile.

Printing profile for P & X Series have found geometric issues on inner parts. Which only occurs when selecting P&X series printers, A1 and A1mini profile doesn't have this issue. Internal parts have been redo. Profile for a1 mini, A1 have remained as v1.4 since it is working correctly.

Instruction:

I put very large size of brim on all my printing profile, with 0mm gap to ensure the printing success rate. Since this model is a bit challenge to print.

You will required to do some post work of removing brim off. It should be very simple. I have increased gap on first layer from design, so it is tight tolerance, but not super tight.

Materials:

If you are printing with some high shrinkage rate filaments, like some of the silk filament. Due to the sinkage rate different. Your part might slide out or break very easily. So, use some good filaments.

Design:

Let's talk about a little bit of design. The retractable mechanism is very simple, the inner piece is interlocking with outter pieces.

Style is more challenging

Adding more details.

Printing suggestions:

This is a tall object with very small contact area on first layer. It is challenge to print. It will print without brims, but it fail very easily that way. If you are slicing the model yourself, make sure you add brims, and set brim gap to 0mm. Also increase the first layer thickness.

Or, just use those profile that I put there. It all have been tested and confirm works.

When I printed it, the bottom fused together and the sleeves don't want to come out. It looks like the brims were inside and outside. Should they be outside only or what caused this? I am using a p1s. I tried to take a knife to free the brim, but at this point I don't know.

that's strange, does your printer have first layer issue?

it does not. the brim settings were set inside and out. I'm printing outside only brim now and see if that helps

are you talking about freeing it from the brim, or the parts that fling out of the wand stuck to the brim?

Printed great on A1 mini. I thought for a minute I was missing a piece of the blade because it was not coming out.

is it suppose to have 3 layers of extension or 2? mine has 2 or could it have 3 just hard to break the 3rd one?

First let me say I love the look of this and thank you for making this and sharing it with the community. I will say this print has given me some issues. The green and the purple are the PLA versions I printed with this profile, and they both had spaghetti failures on their first attempts each. I have had to raise the bed temp up to 65c on my PEI plate just to get them to finish, and even then my second attempt at the green one had layer shifting on one of the inside pieces. I will keep trying

As promised I kept trying and I noticed your print profile temps were all 45c, so I switched to using the cool plate with some Magigoo and haven't had a problem with the prints getting dislodged since. I wish I had noticed what you were trying to do originally and had followed suit sooner. As a result I am bumping my rating up to 5* versus 4*. The only real complaint I have is sometimes when you "flick" the wand the pieces come apart. I.E. I wish the bottoms were a little thicker so they didn't let the smaller pieces launch 1/2 way across the room. #FirstWorldProblems :-)

prints absolutely perfect using the settings provided by the designer. I did change layer height to 0.16. We did get the little bug spot, but see that the designer intends to fix
