Description

Tiny Bins Storage Boxes: https://makerworld.com/en/models/125444#profileId-135505

This design originated as a variation of my Gridfinity Stacking Storage System, specially optimized for smaller boxes, allowing the entire unit to be printed at once. Over time, I expanded on this idea until I arrived at what I think is a pretty elegant design.

The unit features a built-in handle and allows for easy stacking of units on top of each other. Additionally, you can print a separate wall mount plate. Once secured to the wall, you can easily attach and remove the unit from the plate using a built-in French cleat. This design ensures that it's not only wall-mountable but also easily removable when needed, offering both stability and flexibility.

Built-In Supports

The handle involves some really large overhangs that would be impossible to print effectively without supports. As such, I have incorporated built-in supports that support the parts that need it, while not wasting material on the parts that don't. These built-in supports are more efficient and effective than any slicer-generate supports I've found, and should also lead to a better surface finish. I can't promise that the surface finish will be perfect, but it should be pretty good.

I highly recommend utilizing the built-in supports. As a courtesy, I've included a version without them, but the outcome with slicer-generated supports may not be optimal.

If you have concerns, printing the overhang test can help assess your printer's tuning with the built-in supports.

You should be able to easily break off the supports with your hands. Any small sprue burrs can be cleaned up with a hobby knife.

Wall Mounting

I recommend securing at least one side to a stud for optimal security. You may be able to get away without it, but I haven't tested it. Just avoid putting too much weight towards the front.

The French cleat itself is surprisingly strong. The unit locks into the mounting plate quite securely. Make sure you engage the bottom cleats when placing the unit.

The wall mount plate is printed in the strongest possible orientation – flat on the bed. While technically the cleats are parallel to layer lines, there are large fillets that mitigate that weakness. Most importantly, the mounting screws pass right through the cleats. This design choice ensures that even in the unlikely failure where the cleats detach at the layers lines, the screw would still hold it together and should prevent catastrophic failure. It also happens to be much easier to print it flat on the bed.

Feet

The feet are optional, the unit may have a tendency to slide on smooth surfaces, especially when inserting and removing boxes. Printing the treaded feet in TPU can help prevent this. You could also try PETG, it might help a little? Or you can print the rounded feet, or you can leave off the feet entirely.

Parametric Design

This model was created in FreeCAD using parametric design. This is done using the object ‘Parameters’ within the FreeCAD files.

Within the FreeCAD file, the [poorly named] ‘Gridfinity’ section controls the simple X/Y dimensions of the storage box, and the total height of the unit. Most of the other parameters aren't intended to be messed with; it's probably best to just reach out if you wanted something else modified.

Note that the handle can only be resized without certain bounds. The handle will not fit on the 3-wide version of the unit. The handle is sized down for the 4-wide unit, and will likely only fit a few fingers.

Once you've determined the appropriate parameters, open the "Print Ready" folder, which contains the models pre-rotated for optimal print orientation. To export each part, click on the desired component, and select File > Export.
