I designed this strong and sturdy cord reel to give empty 1kg filament spools a second life. Instead of tossing them out, you can repurpose them into a sturdy and functional reels for winding and storing cords, cables, or other flexible materials. The design ensures smooth rotation while keeping the reel securely in place.

Printing & Assembly Instructions

Print the Parts – You'll need to print the support frame, spindle, spacers, and knobs. Ensure you download the correct spacers for your spool brand. Currently, I have spacers for Bambu Lab and Sunlu spools, but I plan to upload more for other brands. I suggest using PETG filament for this application.

❤️If you need a spacer for your spool, just provide me with the total width of your spool, and I can upload a matching spacer for you.

1️⃣ Attach the Spindle – Insert the spindle and fasten it to the empty filament spool.

2️⃣ Assemble the Support Frame – Fasten the frame using the spacers and secure it tightly with the knobs.

3️⃣ Snap It In Place – Line up the spool assembly groove with the arms on the support frame and push it in until it snaps securely.

4️⃣ Smooth Operation – Once snapped in place, the spool will rotate smoothly while staying securely mounted.

✅ The rotating sliding mechanism is purposely designed to simplify the build and eliminate the need for extra parts like bearings. I recommend using a bit of silicone grease to minimize wear and tear for long-term use. The groove is specifically designed to hold silicone grease in place, ensuring smooth operation while minimizing wear and tear over time.

✅ This setup keeps your cords neatly wound while making use of otherwise discarded filament spools.
