This is a 4x4 auxetic square I designed after being inspired by a video by “make anything” on YouTube. While I have had some interest in these types of structures for a while now, it was watching his video that gave me the inspiration to make this. The “auxetic” part of this model means that when the structure expands in one direction, it also expands in the direction perpendicular to it and the same when is contracts. The cool part about this type of auxetic structure in specific is that it has two states/orientations that are a difference of 90° in orientation from each other, which is what gives this model the transforming aspect when you insert tiles that have designs on them. I have already designed a couple tiles such as seen in the pictures above, but I fully encourage you to make your own designs with the files provided (if you have any questions, please feel free to shoot me a message) or just your completely own creation! The 4x4 auxetic square uses hinges that fold in on each other which means that the hinges that are on the top will use supports and will require both removal and to break them in to get a very smooth transition. I recommend only having one side with the tiles in otherwise it makes is harder to open and fully close. Happy printing!
