Description

There are a lot of great spool weight models out there, but they all seem to have one thing in common. You must screw on a flange to capture it in the spool. Some of them have an internal cap so you don't spill the weights, but that can reduce the internal volume. I wanted a way that I could easily insert and remove it without having to screw/unscrew a flange. My design has these advantages:

  • Fully parametric with Fusion 360. Simply input the desired diameter and spool width to generate a model between 52mm and 73mm diameter. If you don't have Fusion, just request your dimensions in the comment section and I will quickly generate the models and post them for you.
  • Super simple insertion and removal. Simply insert the spool weight and twist the cap to extend the capture arms. This can even be done while the spool is still in the AMS. Just lift it a little, insert, twist.
  • No need to unscrew the cap once filled. Keep a few of them handy in different sizes for your spools.
  • Prints in a few hours, no supports required.

Printing Instructions

Standard settings in any material, except for the threaded lid, which prints with .1mm layer height for better threads. Print 1 canister, 1 20T Spur, 1 threaded lid and 2 8T drive gears.

Assembly Instructions

Arrange the drive gears so they are symmetrical on the lid. Use 1 3x8mm screw to attach the spur gear to the lid. Leave it just a little loose for smooth operation.

Parametric Configuration

Load the supplied Fusion 360 file and set the parameter for diameter and height to match your spool. The hole tolerance can be adjusted to make sure the drive gear turns smoothly in the lid. It defaults to .4mm which means the hole is .4mm larger than the shaft on the drive gear.

Once your parameters are set, export the highlighted models for printing. Note: the 20T spur and the 8T drive gear do not change with the size of the canister. You can use the supplied stls or my profile for these parts.

Thanks for looking and happy printing. If you have issues or need a different size, please leave a comment.

I want these for all my spools! lol It's a little too short for Numakers. Would be great to have! The measurements are on their website (59mm wide, 54mm hole)

I'll post it shortly. I don't have a Numakers spool so you will have to let me know if it fits.

This works great! Can't believe no one though of this before!!! I don't have Fusion 360 nor do I have any clue how to resize it! Can you adjust the IIID Max one for their newer spools? It's just a little too wide. I can get you the measurements if you need them.

@user_1969211144 Luckily, I had one of the new spools. Doing final test print now. I'll post it later today. Thank you for the positive feedback.
