Description

A 3D topographical map of the British Isles (UK & Ireland)

I previously published this in jigsaw form - British Isles Jigsaw - 3D Topographic Map by james.h.s.brown - MakerWorld but someone asked for it as a solid piece, so thought it made sense to add to geography competition at the same time.

While a “simple” topographical map of the “British Isles” - it can be a useful teaching aid for illustrating the difference of “Political geography” vs “natural geography”.  The model shows the “British Isles” - yet it includes the Channel Islands which are technically part of the same geographical archipelago,  Some view British isles as a neutral “geographic term” but Republic of Ireland/Eire dispute the use of the term.  In this model I've included a small border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland - many people would feel very strongly for and against the inclusion of such a border in a model like this due to the deep history and political issues.   See Names of the British Isles - Wikipedia for more.

But onto the model!
Approx 1:5000000 scale, with height differences scaled x8. Inspired by Add-on tiles for Continental Europe Topographic Relief Puzzle by DerSchweizermaker - Thingiverse, but I worked from the original LIDAR data from OpenTopography - ALOS World 3D - 30m.   If interested in making your own topographic models I've outlined my steps in my previous scotland map descirption 3D Topographic Map of Scotland by james.h.s.brown - MakerWorld

I've painted the model for AMS printing in 4 colours to represent the different contour heights. I think the model also looks great in 2 colours (sea and land) which you can easily do by setting AMS slots 2, 3 & 4 to the same colour/slot.

There are two print profiles - one includes a “frame” - which I think looks good printed in a different colour but you can have it same colour as the base if you want.

Main Model pictured printed in basic PLA using the following materials and paint height settings (on current scaling):

  • 3DQF - Sky blue
  • Bambu - Mistletoe green - 2.89mm
  • Bambu - Brown -4.69mm
  • Bambu - Grey - 5.89mm

Print profile works well - scaled to fit on print plate and good level of detail. Feel free to scale to your preference or alter the height levels of the contour colours to change appearance

Hope you like it :) As always feedback welcome.
