Description
My goal was to 3D print eggs with a beautiful surface finish, which is not entirely straightforward on FDM printers. To coincide with the upcoming Easter season, I designed them with a holder to allow hanging as decoration or simply placing in a nest.
They should be thin, therefore lightweight, yet maintain a round shape with the necessary support.
They are available with and without a hanger, and with and without Fuzzy Skin. See the print profile titles.
Allow the eggs to cool completely before removing them from the print bed. Then, use flat pliers to carefully detach them one by one, gently twisting them sideways. An occasional egg breakage is possible. I have only printed with PLA Matte so far. I haven't yet had the opportunity to experiment with other materials like silk or metal.
I have titled this project exclusive because it took considerable time and experimentation to achieve a reasonably appealing shell. I intentionally avoided a completely smooth surface.
The smooth eggs intentionally feature individual points on the shell. I have randomly placed the seam. A completely smooth finish is only achievable with the back seam setting, but that creates a scar-like appearance. See the last photo…
Visually, the Fuzzy Skin eggs are the most attractive in terms of print cleanliness, due to the intentional 'chaos' created.
