Magnetic levitation light bulb

While brainstorming model ideas for my magnetic levitation diy kit, i had a idea.. you could say i had a bright idea!

This model was really fun to protype, the main challenge was balancing the model so as not to have a wobbly mess.

Assembly:

  1. Gather your components and printed parts (supports removed)

    2. Insert the coil and circuit into the base

    3. Insert the spacer piece

    4.  Insert the “puck” from the levitation kit

    5. Gently fold the wire so that it travels by the wall (centering the circuit)

    6. Add the circuit cover, this piece keeps the circuit in the midle. All parts should go together without too much force.

Please be carefull of the two wires connecting the circuit to the coil.

    7. Now top it all of with the bulb

    And there we go!

Still relatively new to 3D printing but this was by far the most satisfying print so far! For anyone having balancing problems, one trick that works for me is using both hands (2 thumbs + 2 index fingers) to lower the top part from straight above the base slowly. Also, remove the light bulb and lower only the floating piece. I was unable to make it float without doing this. Once I removed the bulb though, it was quite easy. After it begins to float, just place the bulb in! Amazing creation! Thanks!

Forgot to mention - check that the red light in the base is on before balancing. I spent 30 mins with no luck only to realize there was a loose wire!

Thank you so much for your words! :) Yeah, balancing is a tad hard to learn, but once you get a hang of it you can do it pretty much in one go (most of the time). I think i might make balancing ”tools” to go with my models to help people.

What a fun and challenging project! I had a few print failures of the bulb, right at the top where the supports meet the bulb, but I chalk it up to user error. Getting the bulb to levitate is DIFFICULT, but SO SATISFYING once it's floating! I wish there was a positioning template like the pyramid levitation kit design has. Anyway, thanks for the cool design! Printed in Bambu PLA basic white, silver, and black.

Super happy you like it! Was wondering how your own settings turned out. Im really loving that silver PLA, kinda looks like silk pla! And yeah, positioning is pretty hard, but once you get a hang of the ”sweet spot” you can do it in one go. Anyways, stoked you like it! :)

Hah, glad you asked- first I tried all .16, with just the top at .08 to reduce layer lines.. fail! Tried again, fail! Then tried all 0.2 layer height, with the top ramping to 0.8. fail! Finally I ended up using your profile as recommended, and it worked (I should have just done that in the first place, hah) you can see the bulb in the back of my first photo, with the top cut off, that's where they all failed

I just had it fail at the same exact spot using the designers profile. I’m going to try again and if it fails I’ll have to improvise.

Haha! It's not often that someone replies to a 5 stars print profile eval! I must have blocked the lense at the very last second of taking the picture and did not realize it when I clicked send! Definitely a mistake....sorry :/

It definitely looks better when it’s going but I couldn’t find the base to set it up on. My child is enjoying this one, my real child and my inner one.

Great model. Balancing it was a real pain, I was about to give up. Took me about 30 minutes but then I got it. Did you ever make a balancing tool?

Finding the sweet spot is very frustrating at first, but once you get the 'nack' you can pretty much do it in one go! :) As for the alignment tool, I elected not to make one due to lack of interest and because its a tad of material waste.

Fair enough, I get that. It does get easier once you work it out though. The trick is to unplug and give it a bit of time if it is not working after a few tries.

Oh absolutely! I was just seconds before throwing everything out of the window ... ;) At the moment it needs between 5 to 10 tries and if that does not work, I just wait an hour and try it again :D

I did notice this. Make sure the bulb was center on the base. It took me a few tries to get it floating.

I would say this is the coolest thing I’ve ever printed! Feels like you’re breaking every law of gravity.
