The A-10 Thunderbolt II - better known as the “Warthog” - is an icon of close air support. Rugged, heavily armed, and instantly recognizable, this aircraft is designed to endure and deliver. Now, it’s time to bring the legend to your 3D printer.

 

After releasing dozens of successful plane kit cards, I wanted to push my work to the next level. That’s how the Elite Squadron MasterBuilds series was born: larger, more detailed, and more ambitious 3D printable aircraft SnapKits, starting with the A-10.

 

The MasterBuilds A-10 has been engineered for a premium building experience:

 

  • Completely snap-fit - every part locks together with precision, no glue required.
  • Fully supportless - optimized slicing means less wasted filament, zero cleanup.
  • Smart part-splitting hides layer lines and maximizes smooth finish, giving it a near die-cast model look.
  • 1:48 scale with a 36 cm wingspan. This makes it a large, display-worthy piece.

  • Bigger size allows for finer details - the larger scale makes it possible to include subtle panel lines, curves, and features that smaller models simply can’t capture.

     

 

 

 

Despite its massive size, the A-10 fits on a single printer bed  by the next day you’ll have a museum-quality aviation history piece ready to display.

The iconic GAU8 cannon is hand-rotatable, so you can spin up your own “BRRRRT” at your desk.

Risks and Challenges
While the A-10 Masterbuild is already well into development, there are still a few risks and challenges to consider: Print Tuning & Fit: Snap-fit models require careful testing to ensure consistent tolerances across different printers and filaments. I’m running multiple test builds and will adjust tolerances as needed to make sure assembly works smoothly for as many backers as possible. Timeline: Printing and testing such a large model takes time. Each full plate run is around 16 hours, so refining the design is a slow but necessary process. Audience Size: This is the first entry in the Elite Squadron MasterBuilds series. While I’ve already published dozens of successful kit cards, this larger format is new. Community support will determine how far this project can grow. Overall, the core model is already designed and functional. Remaining risks mostly involve refinement and testing, which I am actively working on. Backers can expect transparency, regular updates, and a focus on delivering a high-quality result.
