BACKGROUND
Hi everyone,
My name is An Duong.
Back in 2021, after watching NASA successfully land the Mars Rover Perseverance & Mars Helicopter Ingenuity on Mars, I was so inspired by the mission, and I decided to design a 1:12 scale 3D printed model of these vehicles. After hundreds of hours doing research, modelling, and printing, I finally made the one, and only prototype (which is shown in the photos below). However, I never managed to release the STL files to the public. Why? Because the model was only about 70-80% completed, there were quite a lot of changes I want to make/improve from the prototype, but life got in the way and I never had the time, nor the inspiration to really complete it.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The product is a 1:12 scale model designed based on NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover and Mars Helicopter Ingenuity. This model was designed all by myself using publicly available material from the internet.

The final model will feature all of the main Rover Components, including:
1, The Rover's "Body": a.k.a Warm Electronics Box, or "WEB"
2, Wheels and Legs: Six wheels, the two front and two rear wheels can turn in place a full 360 degrees. Fully articulated "rocker-bogie" suspension system like the real thing.
3, Brains: 2x identical Rover Compute Elements (RCE) hidden inside the “Body”
4, Neck and Head: a.k.a the “MAST”, which contains the SuperCam, two Mastcam-Z imagers, two navigation cameras, and also the MEDA. The “MAST” also has the same joints and movements like the rear thing.
5, Eyes and Ears: includes the Rover "up look" & “down look” cameras, Navigation Cameras (Navcams) on the "MAST", Hazard Avoidance Cameras (HazCams) in the front and RIMFAX at the rear of the Rover.
6, Robotic Arm: fully articulated arm with five degrees of freedom just like the real thing. “Hand” turret also includes SHERLOC and WATSON, PIXL, and GDRT
7, Sample Handling: includes the Sample Handling Wheel
8, Power Source: includes the Radioisotope Power System (RPS) at the rear of the Rover, which is held in place with magnets (can be detachable from the “Body”)
9, Communications: includes all 3x types of antennas (e.g. Ultra-High Frequency, High-Gain, and Low-Gain antennas) as seen on the real Rover.

WHY I NEED YOUR SUPPORT
I work as an aerospace engineer for a company in the UK as my day job, and I hustle at night for my 3D printing business (Morethan3D).
I only have a limited amount of time at night to design my models and typically, I need to spend those hours on designing models that most people would buy, not necessary the models that I love. And without selling enough designs per month, my business would simply run out of business 🙂
That's why I'm crowdfunding this project. If it is successfully funded (which I hope - fingers crossed), I don't have to worry about designing and selling other models to keep my business afloat for at least a month, so I can solely focus on completing this Mars Rover.
With the financial support of this campaign, I will be able to dedicate over a month of design effort necessary to make this the most detailed and accurate Mars Perseverance printable scale model rover available. I will add the remaining details, improve printability, create the print profiles, and provide detailed assembly instructions.
Specifically, below are what I need to do:
1, The Rover's "Body": The current Body is solid, I need to make it hollow so it can house the 2x RCE's (Rover Compute Element) , and the MOXIE (Mars Oxygen In-situ Resource Utilization Experiment) module. Also, I need to add more details such as wiring and cables to the Body.
2, Wheels and Legs: The current Wheel design is good, however, it still needs a bit of fine-tuning as the Wheel spokes are a tad flimsy.
3, Brains: The RCE (Rover Compute Element) has not yet been designed. I'll need to design this part.
4, Neck and Head: I need to add more details to the SuperCam.
5, Eyes and Ears: I need to add more details to the Hazard Avoidance Cameras (HazCams) in the front of the Rover.
6, Robotic Arm: The current design of the Arm is good, but I want to add a few more small details to it such as wiring and cables.
7, Sample Handling: I want to add more details to the Sample Handling Wheel
8, Power Source: The current design of the Radioisotope Power System (RPS) is good, perhaps I can add some minor details to the back frame.
9, Communications: Mostly good, but I'd like to add some more details to the High-Gain antenna.
10, Print profiles: Bambu profiles doesn't exist yet for this model, I'll need to create it.
11, Assembly Instructions: I'll need to create the instructions once the model is fully designed/tested

STRETCH GOALS
If the funding reaches any of these numbers, additional “Rewards” will be unlocked, and ALL backers from ALL tiers will receive these bonuses FREE of charge!
$3,000: Science Vignette Pack
If this stretch goal is reached, I'll provide a set of 3 printable tokens. Each token will be designed as a 150mm diameter x 5mm thick disc. These tokens are great educational, and collectable pieces!
Token 1: MARS 2020 Mission Badge

Token 2: 221BBAKER Geocaching Trackable Marker.
This is actually a Sherlock Holmes Easter egg the NASA/JPL deliberately placed on the SHERLOCK Calibration Target (SCT) on the Perseverance Rover

Token 3: SHERLOC Intensity Target Maze
The SHERLOC Intensity Target Maze is a small, detailed maze on the SHERLOCK Calibration Target (SCT), used to test the laser's intensity and the instrument's ability to scan a surface.

$3,500: Labyrinth Maze Game
If this stretch goal is reach, I'll design the SHERLOC Intensity Target Maze into a proper Labyrinth maze game and you can play it with a small steel ball! You'll need to try to tilt the playfield to guide the ball from the centre to the end of the maze.

$4,250: SuperCam with the red LIBS laser
If this stretch goal is reach, I'll incorporate a small laser into the SuperCam instrument to make it look like it's shooting a laser at a rock (just like the real Perseverance)

$6,000: Mars Terrain Stand
If this stretch goal is reached, I'll provide a printable Mars Terrain Stand for the Perseverance Rover.
Please note: the image below shows a concept only, the final Stand design will have a better representation of Mars terrain and tread tracks for maximum authenticity.

$9,000: The complete SHERLOCK Calibration Target (SCT) housing
If this final stretch goal is reached, I'll provide a 1:1 scale printable SHERLOCK Calibration Target (SCT) housing
The SHERLOCK Calibration Target (SCT) is a set of 10 different materials located on the front of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, designed to calibrate the SHERLOC instrument by providing known standards for Raman and luminescence spectroscopy. The target includes a Martian meteorite, spacesuit materials, optical patterns, and polymers, allowing for calibration, supplemental science, and testing of spacesuit materials for future human missions.
With this SCT housing, you can either 3D print each “materials” in a representative colour/filament, or source the correct materials & the fabrics to maximize authenticity and turn it into a highly valuable collectable item!
