Luna Scape: A Modular Protective Case Inspired by the Moon for the Insta360 Luna Ultra

When I saw the Insta360 Luna Ultra contest, I wanted to create something more than just a protective case. My goal was to design a modular system that protects the Insta360 Luna Ultra, keeps its accessories organized, and is enjoyable to both use and 3D print.

The design is inspired by the surface of the Moon, featuring a crater-like texture that gives the case a unique appearance while maintaining a clean and modern look.

One of my main priorities was printability. Every part has been designed to print without supports, making the project easy to print while reducing material waste and post-processing. I spent a lot of time refining the tolerances, snap-fit joints, and mating surfaces to give the case a premium feel and make assembly as simple as possible.

The main insert is printed in TPU, providing the right balance between protection, flexibility, and aesthetics. The modular interior currently includes dedicated compartments for the Luna Ultra, the 1/4” Thread Handle, and a USB-C cable, with room to expand as new accessories become available, such as the microphone or an extra battery.

Customization was also an important part of the design. The front badges can be swapped in seconds, and the nameplate can be personalized to make each case unique.
 

To keep assembly simple, the case uses only two screws on the back. The front hinge relies on a short piece of filament as a pin, while the printed snap-fit features provide a secure and satisfying closure.

I really enjoyed working on this project. It took many hours of design, prototyping, printing, and testing, but every iteration helped improve both the appearance and the user experience. I hope Luna Scape will be useful for the community, and I look forward to expanding it with new inserts as the Insta360 Luna Ultra ecosystem continues to grow.
