FoldDeng 253: Modular Lattice Luminaire Celebrate the intersection of structural design and atmospheric lighting with a highly tactile, build-it-yourself geometric luminaire. FoldDeng 253 is a comprehensive 253-piece assembly that bridges the gap between a complex architectural puzzle and a functional tabletop light. The model is constructed from 252 precisely engineered 3D-printed components that lock together to form a stunning, faceted spherical shell around a central light source. The resulting polyhedral matrix uses its intricate negative spaces to filter and cast light, turning a rigid geometric lattice into a source of warm, ambient diffusion.

Fabrication Protocol & Settings Manufacturing is optimized for both FDM and MSLA (resin) ecosystems. To streamline the complex printing process, all pieces are systematically labeled with letters directly on the build plate.

 

Recommended Baseline Parameters:

  • Material: White PLA is highly recommended for the main shell to maximize light reflection, though you can use any color of your choice.
  • Hardware Compatibility: The connecting pins are optimized to work flawlessly on FDM printers, but printing the pins in resin (MSLA) is recommended for maximum dimensional accuracy and frictionless assembly.
  • Layer Height: 0.12mm to 0.2mm for the main structural pieces.
  • Vase Mode Diffuser: The internal light diffuser is provided as a separate 3MF and STL file. It must be sliced in Vase Mode at 0.24mm layer height minimum with no bottom layers, a 12mm brim, and a 0mm gap.
  • Supports: None required for any of the printed components.

 

Assembly Notes Building the FoldDeng 253 is an engaging process. Instructions are attached to guide you through the modular construction:

  1. Organize your 252 printed pieces according to their build-plate letter designations.
  2. Begin assembling the tessellated shell using a thick white wood glue to secure the structural pins and joints.
  3. Place the Vase Mode Diffuser inside to soften the internal light path.
  4. Insert a standard D60mm x 8mm LED Lamp Creative Kit (the 253rd piece) into the base to complete the luminaire.

 

The Philosophy of Form Structure dictates light. In FoldDeng 253, the physical mesh is not merely a housing, but a tessellated structural array. By breaking a continuous surface into discrete, interlocking geometric nodes, the design invites the maker into the architectural process. The physical assembly becomes a study in modularity—how individual, rigid elements can tile together to create a unified, curved spatial enclosure that softens glare into an inviting, atmospheric glow.
