A gando (龕灯) is a type of portable lamp invented in the Edo period. It was said to have been used by robbers when breaking into homes because it only illuminated the front and not the owner, and also by detectives when searching for robbers, earning it the name 'robber's lantern' (強盗提灯). Made of metal or wood with a barrel-like appearance, it featured two rotating iron rings within, supported by a two-axis gimbal. A candle was fixed in the center of the inner ring, ingeniously designed to remain vertical and prevent the flame from extinguishing no matter how the gando was swung. In modern terms, it could be used like a flashlight.」(From Wikipedia)

This gando lamp was originally made of wood or metal, and its light source was a candle. I tried to reproduce this with a 3D printer. The mechanism that keeps the light upright even when rotated 360 degrees seems applicable to modern lanterns as well.
