Model Image Rule Update
Model Image Rule Update

At MakerWorld, we believe every design deserves to be seen as it truly is. Based on recent data analysis and user feedback, we’ve noticed that some models are displayed with images that do not accurately reflect the actual model, or lack photos of a real printed result. This can lead to unmet expectations after downloading and printing.

To improve transparency and help users better understand what they can expect, we are updating our model image requirements as follows.

Core Requirement

Model images must include at least one real printed image that matches the uploaded model file and model name. The photo should clearly, accurately, and fully show the final printed object.

Please note: This means that both model images and profile images must include real printed images. Our goal is to ensure that users can make reliable and informed judgments about a model’s actual print outcome based on the images provided.

Implementation Timeline

  • Rule Effective Date: The updated rules will take effect on February 5, 2026.
  • Newly Uploaded Models: Models uploaded on or after February 5, 2026 will be reviewed under the new rules. Models whose images do not include a real printed photo may be restricted from visibility.
  • Existing Models: We are providing a 90-day self-review and optimization period for models that have already been published (deadline: May 5, 2026). During this period, you may gradually review and update your model images. After the adjustment period ends, models that still do not comply with the rules will be handled in accordance with platform guidelines.

Special Cases to Pay Attention To

In addition to missing printed photos, the following situations may also affect users’ ability to accurately evaluate a model. Please review and adjust accordingly:

  • Incomplete Display: Images that only show close-up details or make the physical object difficult to identify may prevent users from understanding the overall result. Please include at least one clear photo showing the complete printed model.
  • Significant Cover Discrepancies: We recommend prioritizing real printed photos as cover images. Moderate enhancements (such as color correction, background, or lighting adjustments) are acceptable. If renderings or design images are used as covers, please ensure that the model’s core characteristics—such as shape, structure, and proportions—closely match the actual printed result.
  • Mismatch Between Images and Files: If the cover image shows a full set models, but the downloadable files include only part of the content, please update the cover image accordingly or upload the corresponding model files. Model images must accurately reflect the actual downloadable content.

We firmly believe that authenticity is the strongest bridge between creators and users. This update represents a shared step forward for the community, enhancing the quality of content across MakerWorld. We want model images to accurately reflect the real printed outcome, allowing thoughtfully created and carefully presented works to be seen by more users, and ensuring that every download and print brings delight, not disappointment.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

@CurlyFries1 Yes! Hopefully will see a decrease in AI models, point farmers, and model stealers.

@Tehno well AI is advancing with each year- maybe we're not going to. It's not what it is - it's how you use it. Some people are using it for making trash but are making very useful things with it.

@CincyDesigns What are you actually changing? There is still the issue of people burying their real image behind 8 AI ones. The average person does not scroll over that far. We NEED the model cover image to be a real photo.

@rickichu200 @CincyDesigns : yeah, it is kind of weird to me that people wouldn’t look at what there printing, for me looking at all of the pictures is a reflex almost, like if your going to print it at least look at what your going to be printing

@johnbcs Please make an exception for this rule when uploading and setting as private! I often resize/rework models for my wife and upload them to her account so she can print them from the app. Applying restrictions like this prevents me from doing so. It's great for publicly posting, not for private.

@DieProfikeit I use an approved private model as my transfer hub. You can add infinitely new print profiles with completely different stuff to start your printers remotely.

@johnbcs @FreshCityP2S : There's something similar already in place; there has to be a real photo of a print, even if private, or the upload will fail.

@KitCrafters This is great to hear! I feel it's very important that the printed result matches accurately with the model cover and this update to the image requirements is very aligned with ensuring this for all users; thank you!

@TripleGWorkshop Why not just ban AI images? They never match the model anyways.

@eduo @DieProfikeit : "Pure Ai content is banned for over a year now, that problem should be and mostly is solved." Right off the bat this is an incorrect statement. I keep reporting AI content where the model is clearly bad but the image presented is the AI image used to generate the AI model to begin with. This is "pure AI" for me, and it's rampant.

@DieProfikeit @eduo : I think AI is just a tool and if used correctly levels the playing field a substantial ammount. There are a lot of people as myself on this platform that do related things professionally. You probably wont compete with an engineer in good mechanical design, or a product designer with the over all look of the package, graphic designers and photographs are awesome at presentation too. Some of the popular maker here seem to be based completely in marketing and social media, while their models are pretty bad. Thats not "fair" either. I would allow full on AI content and make forced pop ups from time to time to let people rate how misleading the cover pictures are. We usually accept a big discrepancy in every day life. The McDonalds burger in your hand doesnt look remotely like the one on the menu picture. Its most likely not even real food they used to take that picture. Advertisment is a dark art of faking stuff. And people will ride this edge to gain advantages over others.

@Ulade I know this is 5 months later, but I don't think these changes worked. I see more examples of your incorrect model all over the place now. Is there anything additional being done? Can we finally have the actual printed model as the cover photo without a bunch of fake enhanced backgrounds?

@user_249145940 So now that the grace period is over, how do we report models that use misleading or outright deceitful images?
