This isn't exactly a new model.I published it a week ago, but I haven't had the time to write a meaningful post to explain how I came up with the idea. "Benchy Through Time" was designed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the beloved 3DBenchy. I wanted to create something that didn't just remix the original but captured the journey 3D printing has taken over the past decade.Concept and InspirationThe core idea was simple:The 3DBenchy sailing through a time portal, transforming from its classic, iconic form into a modernized version. I imagined a moment frozen in time where the rear half remains the classic 2015 Benchy and the front half emerges sleeker and updated, symbolizing how 3D printing evolved from the early hobbyist days into today's highly advanced, accessible technology.Design ProcessTo bring this idea to life, I started with the CC0 STEP file of the original Benchy provided by Daniel Norée and, using Fusion 360 (CAD software), I split the model into two distinct halves. For the rear, I kept the geometry true to the original as a tribute.For the front, I modified the surfaces, adding smoother transitions, sharper details, and modern touches while preserving the recognizable silhouette. Finally, I highlighted some details of the front part with a silver marker (I'm not so good at painting, as you can see in the photo!). The portal itself was designed as a circular frame, decorated with a string-art-inspired pattern to suggest the energy and distortion of time travel. Structurally, the portal and the two Benchy halves connect via a simple square pin, making assembly straightforward and ensuring clean alignment. I also created a second version: a solid, single-piece Benchy that blends both halves without the portal for those who prefer a simpler print.Final ThoughtsThe model was meant to be not just a remix, but a story: a tribute to how far the community has come, how 3D printing matured, and how the spirit of making remains timeless. Thanks for reading and for all the love the model has received so far!
