Description

Introducing the Valve Steam Controller Charging Stand!

Introduction

I was lucky enough to get an order in during the first wave of Steam Controllers earlier this week, and now that I have my hands on it I thought it would be a good idea to have an organised spot on my desk to keep it. So after sitting down for an afternoon and making a couple quick prototypes, I have now completed a 'V1' of a controller stand!

Description

The stand is fairly simple, you can print it off, remove the supports, and start using it!

I have attached the print profile I used for the stand in the photos. Feel free to bump up the infill percentage if you want the stand itself to be heavier, but the controller does add a fair amount of stability on its own.

The design in the photos was printed with the Bambu Matte Black (Charcoal) PLA.

Print it off and let me know what you think!

Features

  • A stand for your Steam Controller & Puck (duh)
  • Cable storage vacancy (inside the bottom, covered by the removable lid)
  • Cable passthrough channel on left, right, and back sides.
  • USB-C pass-through hole to power the puck.
  • Lip around the puck cradle, if you pull up you can remove the controller with the puck for tethered play. Or, pulling towards yourself will let you keep the puck in the stand for wireless sessions! (See gifs below!)

Pull towards yourself to keep the puck in the stand

Pull up to keep the puck attached

Disclaimers & Acknowledgements

I must give a huge thank you and acknowledgement to Valve for releasing the STL and STP versions of the controller and puck, as I referenced those for the measurements for this design. I would not have been able to make this as accurate with just a pair of calipers (:P). Those designs are available at https://gitlab.steamos.cloud/SteamHardware/SteamController

SC fits perfectly! I’m also using a 180 degree USB-C adapter to hide the cord

Great to hear! I hadn't actually thought of that... The old Steam deck dock trick :P

Puck is not held tight, so every time you pick it up the puck pops out and makes it not usable unless you always want the pick tethered while playing.

The puck not being secured is on purpose so it can spring up onto the controller. This is one of the things I am still playing around with, as I initially didn't like the idea of having it secured in the stand. But having now used it for a couple days I do agree it can be finnicky to remove the puck when you just want to lift the controller. I will very likely play around with adding a slight 'channel' to allow you to either slide the controller off with the puck, or pivot it against the channel to pop it off back into its cradle. Thank you for the feedback!

Hi there, just wanted to let you know I have updated the model with a lip, so that the puck can still easily come out by simply pulling up on the controller. Or, stay in the stand if you pull the controller towards you when picking it up. Feel free to reprint and give it a shot!

Hey, thank you for the feedback. I have actually just updated it to have a little lip around the puck cradle so that you can choose to either take the controller out of the stand without the puck, or with the puck as desired. In version 1 I initially left it open, but after having used it for a little bit I agree it is finnicky to take it off manually every time. If you're interested please consider re-printing and revisiting your review. Cheers!
