Description
The Story Behind the Design
This project started when my fiancée needed a specialized tool for her Master’s research. Standard vises were too bulky or blocked the ports of her microfluidic PDMS chips. I designed this compact holder to provide a secure grip while leaving the sides completely open for fluid tubing and real-time experimentation.
Overview
A compact, sturdy, and fully 3D-printable desktop vise. While originally engineered for biomedical research, it’s perfect for any hobbyist, engineer, or maker who needs to hold small parts during soldering, sanding, or assembly. No extra hardware (screws/bolts) required—100% 3D printed!
Key Features
- Adjustable Range: Supports objects from 10mm up to 55mm in width.
- Side-Access Design: Unique geometry allows tubing or tools to reach the workpiece from the sides.
- Tool-Free Assembly: Fits together perfectly right off the print bed.
- Mechanical Integrity: Optimized thread tolerances for smooth, reliable movement.
- Stability Pro-Tip: Use double-sided tape on the base for a rock-solid grip on your workbench.
Printing Recommendations
- Material: PETG or PLA Tough recommended for durability.
- Infill: 50% for the Screw, 15% for other parts (Gyroid or Grid).
- Walls: 3–4 wall loops for strong threads.
- Layer Height: 0.2mm (0.16mm for smoother thread action). Adaptive layer height works great for the Base and Clamp.
Notes: Designed with love for a Biomedical Engineer. If this tool helps your research or your hobby, I’d love to see your makes!
