Description
The Notre-Dame Gargoyle represents a fascinating synthesis between functional engineering and the romantic vision of the nineteenth century.
Although these creatures are commonly associated with the original Gothic period, the sculptures we admire today are largely the result of the restoration overseen by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the mid-19th century, who chose to reinterpret the medieval spirit through a markedly symbolic taste.
From a technical point of view, the term properly identifies the gargoyles of the gutters, designed to expel rainwater away from the cathedral walls, distinguishing themselves from chimeras which instead have a purely decorative function.
The aesthetic of the work is characterized by its grotesque and unsettling appearance, which blends animal, human, and demonic features into often thoughtful or menacing forms.
In addition to the legend of the creature "Gargouille" defeated by Saint Romanus, the choice of these subjects hides a profound social meaning, as the architect wanted to represent the popular classes and the Parisian bourgeoisie of the era, elevating the "monstrous" and the humble to the rank of guardians of the sacred.
In this way, the sculpture becomes a symbol of protection and belonging, uniting the spiritual dimension of the cathedral with the complex and multifaceted reality of the city it observes from above.
And this is just one of them!
