Description
IKEA Coffee Table + TV Turntable = Cheap 3D Scanning Turntable /w Metal Surface
I really liked @Paw85's 3DSM and SMMT systems for 3D scanners. After looking at different options, most were plastic and would not really work nicely with magnetic markers. For starting out I ordered 12" plastic TV turntable off amazon that was only 12.80€ but I had to find a way to make magnets work on it.
quoted some custom laser cut sheets but that was more expensive and would take more time. So I turned to IKEA exploration and lo and behold - GLADOM is a 45cm in diameter steel, powder coated coffee table with a removable plate. It's a bit on the bigger side for what I need but it only cost 18.00€.
After whipping up a quick riser pizza slice and some VHB double sided tape, this was the result.
Parts list
- 1x IKEA GLADOM
- 1x 12 inch TV turntable from Amazon (there are many variants of the same identical turntable)
- some VHB double-sided tape or similar
Instructions
- Print the risers - 1 plate with 6x pieces is perfectly good.
- Align them like in the picture for easier adhesive tape application. Lay 2 lines of tape across all of them.
- Cut the tape from the other side (longer blade works better) and you'll be left with perfect size tape on each piece.
- Align the slices and do a test fit - once done, clean the table surface and glue the pieces in place.
- In my case it was a nice friction fit on the turntable but if you want, you can also add the tape between the risers and the turntable for permanent mounting.
