Description

I put together this little rack for drying out and storing 5.5" polishing pads used in auto detailing. It's about as long as can be made on my printer, 240mm, and holds 7 pads. The honeycomb walls promote airflow, while also saving filament. The spacers keep the pads from touching while drying, and the small spacer holding rail installed as pictured keeps pads from falling out. It comfortably holds 5.5" pads, and 6.5" pads can fit with just a little squeeze over the front rail but will have plenty of space once inside.

The rack itself is modular, it can be printed to attach multiple racks one on top of another using a double sided stacking top piece included in the file to make a 14, 21, etc pad unit.

As I designed this for holding polishing pads, I realized that it made quite a nice little modular shelf in general for lightweight items. In the attached profile you will see a variety of parts on individual plates for you to mix and match as you wish. You could use them to make simple assemblies like a pad holding shelf with no top, a pad storage rack without spacers to hold more than 7 pads, a general tool rack, a little rack for holding microfibers, a rack with no honeycomb but just open rails, really a lot of things. Make something useful for yourself if you feel inspired.

To make the pad rack pictured in this model profile print plate 10 twice, and 11, 12, and 13 once. The pieces are all press fit, assemble them as they are in the picture of the finished rack.

There are also two styles of wall hangers included which can be screwed to a wall and the rack face can hook onto them through the large hexagons on either end for out of the way storage if you wish. The hangers print with 3 walls and solid infill around the countersunk screw holes for strength.
