Description

Some friends have a "Days 2 in 1" Walker/Wheelchair that they find really useful - except for one very frustrating issue.

When it is being used as a wheelchair, the ‘push handle’ moves forward/backward as the chair is being pushed. They found that the chair is difficult to control as a result. After checking out the disability stores to no avail, they wondered if something could be 3D printed.

…silly question… of course it could be…

The feedback from my friends, after a pair of this model were fitted, was “it worked a treat at his appointment & made my life easier when manoeuvring with [husbands name] sitting on it as it enabled more control”.

Print File Options

I have provided three print files. Two for this strengthener:

  • Countersunk head screw version (M6 x 30mm)
  • Cap Head Screw Version (M6 x 25mm)

These are basically designed for ‘semi-permanent’ fixing (i.e. need a tool to fit/remove).

Note! The use of a M6 x 30mm ‘hand bolt’ can turn either version into one that is easily removed.

  • the third print profile is for the following

Additional “Fix” for the 2 in 1

While fitting the strengtheners, I found the main adjustable handles (when used as a walker) did not want to tighten up securely. A plastic shaped washer sits under the head of the bolt - and the whole assembly spins when the winged nut is tightened (centre of the image below).

The red frame has a hexagonal hole under the washer that is the size of the head of the bolt. The manufacturers most likely found that this did not work well - so added the plastic washer.

The third print profile includes a washer that fits into the hexagonal shape on the red handle, and holds the head of the bolt securely into place. Once positioned correctly, the handles can be tightened easily.
