AMS is NOT required to print, you can manually swap at each of the layer swap points. The AMS does automate the process though, and that's the route I took.
I use PETG and the Cryogrip plate for my HueForge prints, I like the combination, and almost never have an adhesion issue. Some setup complain abut the .04 layer height with a .4 nozzle, but it works just fine.
Project: Princess Donut
Print at 100% infill with a layer height of 0.04mm with a base layer of 0.2mm
The Model is 150x150mm in size
You may print at higher layer heights below the Min Depth of 0.24mm
The Max Depth is 1.8mm and the Actual Depth is 1.8mm

PETG JAYO Black Transmission Distance: 0.3
PETG BambuLab Basic Lake Blue Transmission Distance: 4
PETG BambuLab Basic Red Transmission Distance: 2.5

Swap Instructions:
Start with Black
At layer #7 (0.44mm) swap to Lake Blue
At layer #14 (0.72mm) swap to Red
At layer #19 (0.92mm) swap to Orange
At layer #24 (1.12mm) swap to Yellow
At layer #32 (1.44mm) swap to White for the rest.
