Dust Cover for AR-9 Systems – An Innovative Custom Design to Prevent Dirt and Oil Residue in the Eye. In AR-9 systems with a 16.75-inch barrel, the short lock time creates a known problem: the bolt begins its rearward movement before the projectile leaves the barrel. This pushes gases and oil residue backward, leading to unwanted dirt and oil residue in the eye, despite wearing eye protection. To solve this issue, I designed a special dust cover for my AR-9 system. The system is based on a Hera Arms platform and is used in conjunction with the Spuhr SP-3026C mount. For mounting the dust cover, I recommend using a high-temperature silicone adhesive. I used Dirko high-temperature silicone because it is extremely durable and long-lasting. Additionally, the original Spuhr screws should be used, but slightly shortened to prevent accidental penetration into the riflescope. The screws should be centrally fixed and firmly glued to ensure optimal stability. An additional function of the dust cover is the ability to directly integrate a barrel temperature sensor, which is particularly advantageous for shooters with high barrel loads. For 3D printing the dust cover, I recommend using PAHT-CF, as it has high temperature resistance and, due to the slight contact of the casing with the dust cover, is particularly robust against abrasion. With this solution, I was able to effectively prevent dirt and oil residue in my eye while shooting. Nevertheless, wearing eye protection remains mandatory to ensure shooting safety.
