The best-hidden items are often those left in plain sight. Following this principle, I wanted to create an object with a hidden compartment for valuable items that can be placed in a room without arousing suspicion. My goal was to design a functional item, not just a prop like an empty USB charger.
I decided on a desktop organizer for stationery. It doesn’t raise suspicion and can feature multiple compartments, using optical illusions to conceal the presence of an additional storage space. This resulted in an organizer with three vertical slots for pens, a tray with a side cutout for sticky notes, a deeper tray for small accessories, and a space for placing a smartphone.
Additionally, there is a drawer at the bottom, which serves as the key to unlocking the hidden compartment underneath. When the drawer is pulled out far enough, the hidden compartment can be accessed from the underside of the organizer. It’s perfect for storing items that shouldn’t be left in plain sight, such as car keys, a USB drive, or emergency cash. Thanks to the multi-level construction, the hidden compartment is not visible from the outside, and the drawer lock mechanism eliminates the need to carry a separate key to access it.
Technical specifications:
• Sticky notes: square, max size 84 mm
• Smartphone: max width 82 mm
• Hidden compartment dimensions: 94 x 37 x 34 mm
The design consists of the following parts:
1. Main body
2. Drawer
3. Hidden compartment
4. 3 decorative plates (optional)
The print is divided into two sheets: one can be printed in a base color, and the other in an accent color. The decorative plates are optional and purely aesthetic.
Printing Notes:
1. Carefully remove supports and any filament residue from the underside surfaces to ensure smooth operation of the drawer and hidden compartment.
2. Due to the thinness of the decorative plates, it is recommended to let them cool fully on the print bed before removing them to avoid deformation.
3. The first uses of the drawer and hidden compartment may be stiff—this is normal as the parts wear in.
