Description

Inspired somewhat by the now cancelled Official Stereo Dock, I designed this desktop stand for your Playdate! It features four 6x2mm magnets in the corners which allow you to securely store your handheld. This model uses about 180g of PLA and prints in 3 hours.

You also have the option to charge your Playdate with this dock. The two screws on the back left of the console actually double as 5V and GND points. This means you can charge it through those screws. The dock has been designed with this in mind, and lets you route a USB charging cable through the dock. The front plate has cutouts behind the magnets, and the 5V and GND wires can be glued onto the backs of the magnets.

If you don't want to bother with the charging, another version of the dock is available that covers up the cable passthroughs.

Behind the stand is a storage box that you can use to hold whatever goodies you like. The divider down the middle not only helps you organize things a bit neater, but also gives the perfect spot to keep your Playdate cover while it's on display, while still giving room for your stuff.

As said earlier, the stand uses four 6x2mm round magnets to align your Playdate. These can easily be found on Amazon, or at the included Maker's Supply link. The front face was designed so that the magnets can be installed simply by pressing them in against a hard surface. Depending on where the specific magnets however, their tolerances may be different than mine. If this is the case, the holes may need to be enlarged slightly, or glue may be needed to hold the magnets in place.

Aside from the magnets, the only other thing you'll need is an old USB cable. Cut off the charging end and strip the ends of the 5V and GND wires. Any other cables can be cut away. Only a couple mm of wire needs to be exposed- just enough to secure to the magnet. The other end can be plugged into any USB outlet.

Did you solder or use glue to attach your wires to the magnets?

I originally soldered the wires, but I wouldn't recommend it since it's really fiddly and the heat of the soldering iron will destroy the magnetism if you're not fast. A better method is using something like a toothpick to hold the wire in contact with the magnet, and use a drop of glue
