This is a Storage Case for the amazing Full Size Modular Magnetic Chess Set design by JC 3D. I printed this Chess board and pieces out as a Christmas present for my kids. It was so much nicer than I even expected that I wanted to help the kids take really good care of it. The original design didn't have a case of any sort and I asked JC 3D if they had one and they didn't.
This design emphasizes the beauty that's already there from the chess set. It makes portions of the printed board visible from the outside. By orienting two of the board quadrants so they face out, you're using the beauty of the 3d printed board to add to the visual appeal of the case. I tried to pay attention a lot of little details on this design so, for example, it is easy to get the boards out from the top using the side cutouts or push the outer boards out from the bottom using the bottom cutout.
This case uses two little 3d printed screws to hold the lid on without needing to rely on a friction fit. These aren't perfect and may change in future iterations, but I think they work well enough.
My case was printed with the same PETG filament I used for the chess board. I printed the case in the pictures with manual Tree-Strong supports. I don't recommend this. it intertwined with the case and it took a long time to cut it out carefully. I later decided to include a bridging test in the project file to test printing it with no support. I printed this piece out on my P1S and it printed without a problem. I suggest trying the bridge test and seeing if you're happy with the results. Only enable support for the case if the bridging doesn't succeed for you. The support areas are already painted on the case so you can just use a manual type if you decide to enable it.
