Description

This is the Pocket Ratchet R1 - A tool, not a toy.

No hardware required - 1.5 hours to print - only 25g of filament (with AMS).

Overview about this model:

I wanted to print a reversible ratcheting driver but all the designs out there were not strong enough.

So I went and designed this driver with “It needs to be strong and just work” in mind :)

That's why I can proudly say that it can drive a wood screw into a pretty thick particle board without a problem, while being printed in just plain old PLA! Isn't that awesome?

Here's a video showcasing just that:

As you saw - it works like a charm :)

I also managed to design it so that there is no hardware required (the magnet is optional).

You can set three positions: Screwing, unscrewing and ratchet lock with a lever.

Printing guide:

  • PLA works great (that is what I printed it out of), but if you want extra strength you can use ABS/ASA,PAHT or even PPA-CF (if you do please share the results! I'm just curious how far this design can be pushed :p)
  • Textured PEI Plate recommended.
  • Use only ≤0.4mm nozzle.
  • If you don't have an AMS, you can select a non AMS profile so you will still have the aesthetic features visible.

Assembly instruction:

Before you proceed with the assembly please read the "Detailed assembly guide" under this instruction pictures!

Detailed assembly guide:

  • In Step 3 it is very important that you place the “lever” so that the pointiest edge of it points at the gear - otherwise it will not work!
  • In Step 6 apply only a little bit of glue on the sides of the shaft then push the lever onto the “lever shaft” then apply a small amount of glue on the top. Be careful not to glue the lever to the rest of the driver - as this can happen if you apply too much glue!
  • In Step 7 is optional, it will work without it just fine :)
If you want to install it use a 4x2mm round magnet. Just apply some CA glue on it and push it into the round slot that's on the bottom of where the hex bit goes.

Video guide:

How to use:

You can change the direction of the ratchet by rotating the lever 90 degrees until you hear a click.

When not in use, please set the lever to the middle position (Ratchet locked) to avoid permanently bending the claws inside.

How I designed it:

Many iterations were needed to get it just right :p

But I really enjoyed the process :)

Pocket Ratchet R1 Project

This picture shows about 70% of all the prototypes that I've made. It took me 10 days to design.

There is definitely room for improving it even more! If you have any ideas on how to improve the design, feel free to DM me :)

Also, I would be very happy if you review both the model and print profile - it really helps a lot in improving my models and MakerWorld experience :)

A minor part modification unexpectedly accommodates my entire screwdriver set, resulting in a more robust and versatile tool, especially when paired with an extension rod. My sincere gratitude to the designer for this exceptionally practical creation

works great! do you think you could make it so that precision screwdriver bits can fit in the gear drive? like maybe scale the hole down?

Looks awesome! I want to add such an adapter to the design in the near future!

you could make a case that the tool slide in to and have the bits fit somewhere in the case

That is a brilliant idea, will do! But I saw that @redshirtx made a gridfinity holder for it - https://makerworld.com/en/models/911202#profileId-872174 maybe you will like it :p

This is an INSANELY strong tool! I made one that actually broke, so I printed a new, and this time with my own profile with focus on STRENGHT :D I have really tried, but i can not break it this time! I uploaded my profile. Read the description on what i changed. Perfect model!! Thanks! Incoming boosts! ;)

I just assembled it, and I have a few questions/improvement suggestions (if you're interested): 1. my printer added supports in the screw-hole. Those were quite hard to remove. You (as a designer) can mark that area of the build as 'does not need support', right? (Or perhaps it just needs that support, I'm not sure) 2. The gear doesn't have a shape to fit into. There seems to be plenty of room on the backplate for a round shape. Would that not a. make the assembly more intuitive and b. make the gear wiggle less? 3. I'd say the magnet is not at all that optional: that holder is way to loose without it. I've seen video's on how to pause the build and insert a magnet during the pause. That might be a good addition. 4. The front-plate could use a small 'ledge' to prevent the gear-notch from overturning. I'm totally aware that I could try to make these changes myself and offer them as a remix. And also that the model is already great as it is. I guess giving feedback is my way of saying 'thank you for sharing!'

These are some good suggestions! The supports on the top plate are intentional. Without them, it wouldn't print that well. Will improve on that and all the other things you mentioned in revision two ;) Thank you very much for such detailed feedback!

Printed great - any chance of a version with a bit holder? Even just a sliding trapdoor with a small void would be great, to hold a couple of bits.

i think we have been putting the lever on upside down that why some of us looks like its pushed up that far but its not.

Perfect Design. I made my own print profile for extra strength, but it was in Orca Slicer. I wish I could share it, but I simply cannot thanks to Bambu being Bambu. Don't get me wrong, I do really like my A1 Mini, but I do wish they were more supportive of open-source, and this is why my machine is permanently in LAN Only Mode. Anyways, question for the designer: would you mind if it gets uploaded as an stl/CAD later? I know I cannot do that, but I would appreciate it. I'll send you the profile if you wish. I changed it to 50% gyroid infill, all the 2D infill patterns as rectilinear, the wall count set to 3, and build plates for backup parts. One build plate for any common set of parts and some with individual parts. The last one was the least necessary, but it if extremely useful for something I'd be using a lot. Note that it was based on the non -AMS profile as I am not an AMS user nor do I plan on being one. Oh, I also added a build plate with two screwdrivers.

ported this to Bambu Studio. Workef perfectly, and you can all port it into Orca, so my comment can be completely disregarded

@Prazgreen Thanks for the profile :) I already designed the Pocket Ratchet R2 (which should be available to download next week) with a much better print profile, so I don't think it will be necessary :p However, thanks for the hassle and feedback!
