For 2025, Tesla has made another small design update, this time upgrading the rear camera on the Model 3 and Model Y. The update includes adding a protective lip around the camera to give it better protection against rain, dirt, snow, and road grime. Here is what the OEM looks like.
Full disclosure - I have honestly not had too many occurrences in getting a dirty lens on my MYP even though it is driven daily and we see a lot of rain in Florida. I do, however, wash my car every 2 weeks and use spray wax / ceramic, and I have mudflaps installed which all possibly helps in keeping things a bit cleaner.
That said, I was feeling a bit left out with my 2023 Model Y, and so I decided to take a stab at creating something similar, except out of TPU.
I've seen some other models floating around that were press-fit and I didn't like the idea of potentially scratching the lens etc.
This model is a tight fit, you will need to fiddle just a bit to get the shield around the lens but it should therefor stay in place. I have not tested in summer time yet to see if it will warp or expand due to heat. I suspect that if you hit this with a high-powered pressure washer at the right angle it might still come loose. It does hold in place at highway speeds with no problem.
To the best of my ability, I have also tested the fit to ensure it does not obstruct the camera view. I also verified this using the camera preview view which is a much wider view than the standard rear camera view you see when backing up. I have not seen any images in the wild of someone with the OEM shield and what that looks like in the camera preview - I would assume Tesla engineered the shield to not obstruct the wider view as well.
Whether or not this thing does anything positive for me is hard to tell - as stated, I haven't had but one instance of a smudged lens.
