Description

MAJOR UPDATE:

After receiving excellent community feedback, I have revised the boxes to make the following changes:

  • The box heights are now listed including the lid height. In the previous version, the height described the box without the lid. This also meant that the actual height to the base of the lid wasn't an exact Gridfinity unit. The box height has been slightly adjusted, but effectively what used to be a “3U” box is now listed as a 4U box including the lid. Please see the new size guide below.
  • I have added 3 new box heights. Boxes now range from 4U to 10U.
  • I have designed an additional new lid that includes slots for magnets. You can now choose between a flat lid, a stackable lid with no magnets, and a stackable lid with magnets.

It is important to note that because of these changes, the old files are not compatible with the new files. I know a lot of people have printed boxes from the old version, so I have uploaded a zip file that contains all the STLs and 3MFs from the old version. You can find it in the “Old Version” folder when you click “Download STL/CAD Files”.

----------------------------

Multi Size Stackable Gridfinity boxes with snap closed lids.

The boxes from 1x1 to 5x5 in size and are between 4U and 10U tall (28mm to 70mm tall from base to the flat on the lid - see size guide below).

Lids are attached by inserting a length of 1.75mm filament and sealing with a lighter or soldering iron.

The boxes were originally designed to be used as pill boxes for travel, and take magnets in their base and tray as per the Gridfinity standard to keep the boxes together on the tray. Lids snap closed strongly and tightly to keep from accidental opening, but open fairly easily. You can find the magnets you need linked in the Bill of Materials section above.

The plain flat lids are designed to open up to 180°, but can also open up to 90° in place in a tray, making a 2 unit wide tray ideal for boxes back to back or with other Gridfinity items.

The stackable and magnet lids open a bit past 90°, but due to the extra height for the stacking, won't open in place.

To choose your size, determine the height you want from the chart below, then select the print profile for the height and lid type you want (e.g. 4U Boxes with Stackable Magnet Lids) and then choose the build plate for the size you want (e.g. 3x4 4U Stackable Magnets).

For the flat lids, the 4x4, 4x5, 5x4 and 5x5 sizes have the lids on a separate plate. All other sizes have the lid on the same plate as the box.

Note that the Unit Height is base on the stackable and magnet lids. The flat lid is 1mm shorter, for example a 4U box with a Flat Lid will be 27mm tall not 28mm. This is to enable the flat lids to open in place in the middle of other Gridfinity items.

Absolutely perfect in every way. Prints well, great fit. Only thing that would make it better would be to have a parametric file to accompany it. I was hoping to a 10u height and don't know where to go to get there. Thanks again!!!

I've updated my gridfinity boxes, and as part of the update I've included sizes all the way up to 10U - hope that helps! Note that the old sizing was based on the boxes without lids, and I've updated it to include the lid height now.

6U Stackable Boxes
gets a bit stringy/separated on the top layer but only on the top of the box and doesn’t impact stackability. great design!

I've just updated the design to try to make that part of the lid a little stronger. There isn't much room to squeeze in extra material there, but I tried to make it just a tiny bit stronger to help with that issue!

I do understand the challenge on that front - great stuff to hear you've managed to make tweaks. Regardless I think the orientation and removal of any need for supports is huge value either way. Thanks again for the great design!

Nice! A few questions that might need answering for others too: 1. How tall is the lid? Meaning what is the total height of the bin with lid? 2. Also are there magnets as well on the stackable lids? Thank you! <3

The stackable lid is 10.4mm tall and the flat lid is 6mm tall. I considered adding magnet slots to the stackable lid, but this would increase the thickness a bit, though I can reclaim some height from the internal gap. If there's enough demand for that, I'd definitely be willing to add that in!

okay. cool. so with the lid on it doesnt properly stack into regular unit heights right? 🤔 that would amazing If it would! just An idea though! Nice design. will try it later

I considered making it a multiple of the unit height, but my options there are to either add 3.6mm to the lid height, or to the base box height. I'm not sure if either of those are good options. Feedback is definitely welcome!

Wondeful model. I love gridfinity but there are not enough with lids that lock as firm as your model. Only tweak I made was adding a negative cube to allow me to put in my custom snap-in labels. Thank you for the great designs. So many versions to enjoy.

I'm interested to know how you added text to your prints in the main images? Did you print it with text face down and use support or text up with support under the lid?

The way I do it is to select the lid, then view the lid from underneath (rotate your view in Bambu Studio until you see the lid looking up from underneath the plate) and then click on the Text tool, type the text you want and click on the lid where you want it positioned. Then set the thickness of the text to 0 (it will jump to 0.01 but that's fine) and the embed depth to 0.4 (equivalent to 2 layers if you're printing at 0.2mm layer height). You might need to set the angle to 180 to have the text show the right way around on the lid. Then select Object on the left (next to global) so that you can choose a different colour for the text. I've attached a screenshot of a sample. Let me know if that's clear enough - I might add this procedure to the main description :)

3U Stackable Boxes
The height size doesn't factor in the lid which doesn't appear correct for stackable calculations.

I'm currently working on an update to this model that will factor that in - I should have it ready to publish within the next week or so. It will also include a new lid that has slots for magnets.

@user_816692818 I've updated the design now - the boxes have been adjusted to make the lid height the exact unit height, and now all boxes are listed by their heights including the lid. So now a 4U box is exactly 28mm tall from bottom to the flat on the stackable lid. Hope that helps!
