Available fully built on my Etsy Shop.

 

This is a JWST lightbox made to showcase the amazing images from the telescope right in your room and makes an excellent night light.  It is an easy print requiring no supports and its quite simple to assemble.  An excellent project for a novice or pro 3dprint user.

 

 

You will need :

 

Very rough instructions:

Assembly is pretty self explanatory, but I'll lay out the steps as best as I can here. 

 

Print the correct number of pieces as labeled in the print profile. 

Glue the main body pieces together to form the basic shape. 

Glue the top ring sections together to form the basic shape. 

Glue the “cut guide” pieces together to form the basic shape.

 

****It is very important you use the cut guide correctly.****

Next take the cut guide and use it to mark your acrylic pieces where you need to cut it(tape it in place). USE THE OUTER EDGE OF THE CUT GUIDE.  Use the jigsaw with a high tooth count metal cutting blade and it will cut the acrylic easy. Support right under the blade is important. Keep the jigsaw speed fast. Don't worry if the edges are ugly, about ½" around the edge will be covered up with the top ring.

 

Next take the same cut guide and use it to mark your piece of plywood. USE THE INNER EDGE OF THE CUT GUIDE.

 

Place your cut plywood into the body and secure it with 6 screws from behind. There are screw holes already. Don't worry if they protrude through the plywood, it won't be seen. This will make the entire assembly extremely strong now.

 

Insert the LED plug into its hole and then stick the strip around the walls making 2 loops.

 

Test fit and adjust your acrylic. Both pieces will sit on the top lip and sandwich the image between them.

 

Now get your backlit image and place a piece of the pre-fitted acrylic onto the top of it and use it to mark where the image needs to be cut. The image is slightly bigger than needed so you can cut it to a perfect fit. Again, dont worry about the edges being perfect as they will be covered up by the top ring.

 

Put the top ring on and use it to predrill the 6 holes into the main body, secure with 6 screws. I did it this way as the 3d printed holes rarely lined up perfectly after all the imprecise gluing of things. 

 

If you want to use the center hex, simply secure it to the acrylic with a small piece of double sided tape.

Very nice, could you possibly add the dimensions in mm? And how are the thin black mirror lines placed on top of the acryllic? Truly awesome design thinking
