Description

IMPORTANT: This is a replacement for the 3D-printed tabletop. Check out the Dune Weaver here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/841332#profileId-787553

This design leverages an IKEA OMBONAD tray as the sand bed. This eliminates the need to glue the base together, which can introduce unevenness to the sand patterns. It also elevates the look of the table, in my opinion. The tray is quite thick (10cm), so I recommend a strong N52 magnet. If possible, you should test the strength of your magnet before buying the tray.

Instructions:

  • You can skip the tabletop, and the pegs in my original design linked above
  • Line up the glass support, mark and drill a hole in the base to pass through the LED strip
  • Add the led strip with two-sided tapes to the inside of the glass support
  • Add a layer of faux leather (optional) to reduce the grinding noise
  • Add sand, a steel ball, and the glasstop
  • Enjoy!

Here are some tips for printing these channels significantly easier using PLA as a support interface for PETG or vice versa. Slow down the support so that they can lay down on each other accurately. This doesn't add significant amount of time, but will allow for the PLA and PETG to play nice together. Use Snug Normal supports and this will tuck all the support into the channels. Add a little more gap to ensure that the support does not connect to the back of the channel for easier removal. Remove the Purge Tower as it is not needed. Also remove the Flush into objects or the flushing will contaminate the material of the main object and make the layer very weak at the layer of change. Ensure that the filament Flushing Volume is set to at least 350 for both. As you can see you get extremely clean removal of the support and the PLA layer just falls out.

Also for a snug fit in the tray for the final piece I had to increase the size of one of the pieces in only the X/Y directions by 100.72%. This gave me a perfect snug fit all the way around.

Replying to @jaerin :
wow, great info. I’ll test these settings out and will incorporate it then in the project file of the remix I made.

Looks great, in your description, you suggested using a stronger N52 magnet, which one did you end up using?

I'm using a magnet that I got lying around from a Phillips Hue sensor. It works okay, but the motions are not smooth. I'm ordering more magnets to test out and will update my instructions once they are here.

I ended up using an 20mm x 10mm magnet and it might nog be perfect but the motion is good enough for me. The end-result is amazing: https://youtu.be/2BRaXHGkRNA?si=egrsbtvoo20IS8b9
