Description

11/30/2024  -  I've replaced the original switchplate model with Version 2.  Stringing has been eliminated on the face and there is now a recess on the back to help get a cleaner installation when the electrical box isnt flush with the wall.

This is a wall switch patterned after a popular dragon and castle motif.  If you are interested in just the frame the model is available here:  https://makerworld.com/en/models/949945#profileId-917687

This printed beautifully. The only thing that happened was the printer head dragged across the background a few times and caused the lines you can see. I don't think it has anything to do with the file, but with the settings I used. I'll try a smaller layer thickness next time and see if that helps. And there will absolutely be a next time!

Interesting pattern. Can I ask how you do that? Also, I replaced the model today with one that doesnt have the stringing problem. I moved the plate out a bit to eliminate the gap and added a recess on the back.

The pattern is the octogram surface texture in Bambu Studio. I just picked up my first printer a few weeks ago and am having a blast. I have yet to try to design or modify anything, but I feel like I should give it a try soon. :-D Happy printing!

This is actually my version of the plate you've posted a picture of here.

It's a very cool switchplate. Printed mine on X1C in white Bambu Lab PLA with very fine settings. The fact that the top part is lifted above the base plate created some challenges, since I did not want to use supports, but with a tiny bit of cleanup, it turned out very well.

I've tried to reduce the stringing, but when I do then the plate is too thick. I may make a different version in the future to clean it up.

Thabks for the feedback. I've published a new model that eliminated the stringing and added a recess on the back.

I don't see recess on the back of the new model. Also, there are a few artifacts on the face plate now (top right and left center).

awful stringing in the middle seems it's suppose to float above the plate and print in thin air? should I have turned on supports?

Did you print it using the stl or the 3mf? If it was the stl you would need to turn on supports. The 3mf should already have everything already set for them.

I'll have to check but in either case the supports worked perfectly

Usable, but would print better if supports were turned on to support the large floating area where the switch attaches.

You right! The profile was missing that for some reason. I originally had it on, but it must have been overlooked on an update. I've got it fixed now. Thanks for letting me know.

printed fine, but plate is flat on back and does not sit on switch/wall flush. otherwise, cool print. but not usable.

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Do you mean the switch box extends beyond the wall surface? Or is it the switch itself? Would it make a difference if I indented the bottom surface? That would mean using support, but I could see what I can do about it.

I think what they mean is that most light switch plates have a semi hollow back so that they can flex inward and create a sort of "seal" as you screw them down. This is the purpose of the hollow back. BUT, there are many professional plates with this kind of design, specifically wood ones. It's a non issue tbh but I understand the concern. Perhaps you could boolean a shape in there with some scaffolding to strengthen. Wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to update (I'm making the file now lol).

yes, the bak part of the pkate is glat so the swich mounts wob't allow the plate to sit flush to the wall. if the back plate was indented slightly, the plate would sit more flush. a normal switch plate has a shallow area in the back this readon. I really like your design and would love to use it!
