Description

This model is a demonstration example of an extra-articulated Wyrm with 106 segments connected by compact spherical joints!

I developed this compact spherical joint to be more compact and stronger than is possible with the typical ‘chain link’ joint found in almost all articulated models. The compact spherical joint allows for shorter segments and completely hides the joint connection.

The model I shared here is the 17th version that I developed. I went through a lot of test prints to optimize the joint geometry.

Overall, this articulated joint enables articulated models of higher quality than is possible with chain link connections.

Please use this model as an example of what is possible with this type of joint. I hope this demonstration model will inspire a new wave of better articulated models!!

**Added 32, 64, and 128 segment long versions to download and as well as plates in the print profile.

Excellent design! I really like the added feature to be able to replace segments. Do they ever accidentally disconnect?

Thank you. No, in the one day i had it in my hand and also my two kids, nothing disconnected.

Now also here at Makerworld available.

Now there is also a Baby Snake available with this kind of connection. But i recommend to print it in 120% scale, because 100% is really very fragile. https://than.gs/m/1233629

Great design. You have my admiration and respect! I took the mechanic of your design, recreated it in CAD and optimized it for my model which will be published soon after final Test prints. stay tuned. Will post a link here and would be happy If you tell what you are thinking about. Maybe we can improve it further and create the perfect articulating joint.

This is the first design i made with the connections you created. Second and more improved will follow soon. https://www.printables.com/model/1089314-ultra-articulated-starfish

I love it, but it makes me feel uncomfortable for some reason 😅

Thank you to the author for designing such a clever joint model. I have modified the hybrid rattlesnake model based on this. https://makerworld.com/zh/models/913429#profileId-874587

i really like this, and am very curious to see how small you can get the links at the end, i have a goal to make baby snakes but each time i make them the tail parts are allways to small and the chain breaks am hoping this might give me more hope and ideas ! will boost later after i print one of these :D

this design was optimized for short segments, not necessarily small. as is, it might not print well scaled down. I might take a look at the design when I get some time and see how small it can go with some revisions

if you do ever get time that would be fantastic info. is it okay to edit this and try and make it into something? really loved how it turned out

Awesome worm. Would like to learn how to make something like this, but tinkercad looks to be a bit to limited.. May I ask what cad program you used for making this?

Thanks! I used Solidworks. It is good for mechanical/geometric stuff.

I've made 5 of these and had zero issues. One of the coolest articulated designs out there.
