JUSTICE FOR PNUT

Peanut "P'Nut" the Squirrel (c. 2017 – November 1, 2024)

Peanut, known affectionately as "P'Nut," was an eastern gray squirrel whose charm captured the hearts of thousands worldwide. Rescued as an orphaned baby in 2017 by Mark Longo, Peanut became an integral part of his rescuer's family and an unexpected star on social media. Mark bottle-fed Peanut and helped him heal after a near-fatal injury, and what started as a rescue effort blossomed into an inseparable bond between a man and his unique companion. Together, they brightened the days of hundreds of thousands through light-hearted videos that showcased Peanut's personality and antics, drawing smiles, laughter, and inspiration.

Peanut wasn't just a pet; he was a symbol of resilience, love, and the unexpected joys that life can bring when least anticipated. He transcended the image of a wild creature and brought people together—online and in his community—to connect over a shared love for animals. Peanut’s story served as a reminder of the importance of compassion, kindness, and seeing the beauty in the most unlikely friendships.

Tragically, Peanut's life was cut short on November 1, 2024, after being seized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. His untimely death sparked outrage and sadness among his many fans, who mourned the loss of a beloved creature taken too soon. Peanut's legacy, however, will not be forgotten. He has become a symbol of the need for compassion and justice, inspiring many to advocate for changes in how wild animals are treated in cases like his.

Peanut leaves behind Mark Longo and his family, along with hundreds of thousands of friends and supporters who will forever remember the joy he brought into their lives. In honor of Peanut's spirit, we hope his story will inspire more understanding and empathy for both animals and the people who care for them.

May you rest in peace, Peanut. You are dearly missed.
