THE SPIKES HELP THE COVER STAY IN PLACE. THE SLOT HELPS TO FIT THE COVER WITHOUT RUINING THE PLANT. FOR LARGER PLANTS YOU CAN EASILY CUT OFF A PART OF THE HEXAGONAL STRUCTURE WITH SCISSORS TO CREATE THE NECESSARY SPACE.
