Description

[Update 24.12.01: Applying pressure in two stages can effectively avoid defects caused by material shrinkage. This approach allows for more precise control of the overflow length at the top surface, reducing the time needed for post-process polishing. Initially, 8.8g of PLA was recommended; now, 8.5~8.6g of PLA is advised. After the molten plastic is placed into the mold, apply pressure for 15 seconds, let it sit for 1 minute, and then apply pressure again for another 15 seconds.]

This is a mold for making dice by recycling 3D printing waste (PLA).The mold, printed using PETG (PETG-CF is a preferred alternative), can recycle approximately 8.8g of PLA at a time.

Required Tools:

  • Oven
  • 3M respirator
  • Silicone baking tray
  • One G-clamp
  • One M2 10mm screw (used as an ejector pin)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer

Manufacturing Process:

  1. Place 8.8 grams of PLA in the oven and heat at 210°C for about 8 minutes.
  2. Use the G-clamp to secure the mold tightly.
  3. Pour the melted plastic into the mold, insert the plunger, and press or step on it with firm pressure (about 15 seconds).
  4. Allow the mold to cool for approximately 5 minutes, then open the mold and use the M2 screw as an ejector to remove the dice.
  5. Remove any rough edges and sand the dice for a smooth finish.

Remember to not apply too much pressure (i stepped over it) - the mold will wrap internally and the result will be affected

any chance of doing this with a D20?

Currently, it’s only suitable for making molds with simple shapes, which makes both handling and demolding easier.

Has anyone had any experience using ABS instead of the PETG? I know it has a lower melting temp - curious if it could also perform?

I have tried ASA, and it works.

Absolutely love the idea, finally found a way to deal with the endless amount of purge I'm getting from my AMS

Melting plastic can produce fumes; it is recommended to work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask.
