I made changes to the original model, to make it look more interesting, which I thought would suit the fantasy steam punk style I have chosen better.

I took the 3D print and thoroughly sanded it, using sand paper and needle nose files, I stepped up the grit of the sand paper, starting at 70 grit and going up to 600 grit.
To fill any seams between different parts, I used a thick application of cheap craft paint in the cracks, which i then went over and sanded.
I started by priming the model, then base coating the dials with an off white, and the sides with a black.
to paint the copper, i started by using a metallic copper paint, then a series of black and brown washed, followed by a dry-brush with an old damaged brush, using a lighter colour to create highlights.
for the off white parts, I used a saturated red/brown wash, followed up with a dry-brushing in a lighter colour than the initial base coat.
please note i didn't paint or prime the internal cylinder, the spring components or the inside of the counters.
once finished i used a clear spray lacquer to protect the paint job.
To glue the different parts together, I used uhu, however super glue should also work.
the ends of the cylinder piece were glued, and also the ends of the pin, however the springs that fit on the pin should not be glued.
